Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 4
*Class max is 4 learners to allow for more individualized attention.*

Do your learners have difficulty actually listening to what they hear? Do they remember the details? In this class, learners we will begin to focus on the importance of listening for details to gain understanding. This class is for 7-9 year olds. There are other separate "Listen and Hear" classes available for 9-12 year olds and 11-14 year olds.

In the first session, we will discuss using listening skills in different situations and the difference between hearing and listening. Next the learners will practice using their ability to listen for detail by following the teachers verbal step-by-step instructions to complete sequential paper and pencil type activities. Each task will be checked immediately for accuracy to help learners understand the expectations. Learners will be told to listen carefully for details the first time each instruction is given, but they will also be encouraged to ask for a repetition if needed.

Each session will involve the same type of verbal and written activities, however, the vocabulary and concentration level required to complete these activities will become increasingly challenging.

Brain Fitness exercises, some involving physical movement, will also be included. Class size is kept very small to allow for more individualized attention.
Learning Goals
The goal of this class is to help the learner realize the importance of listening for details and to begin to be a better listener by following directions containing an increasing number of details as well as begin learning some brain fitness exercises.

Other Details

Learning Needs
This class is designed to support all learning needs including those with ADHD / ADD, Dyslexia, ASD and others. Class size is kept very small so the teacher can help meet needs of each learner. Brain fit exercises challenge each individual.
Parental Guidance
One brain fitness exercise will involve balancing. A sturdy NON-rolling, NON-swiveling, NON-rocking chair or a sturdy table is required. Learners will be told to put their foot down and/or grab the chair or table if they feel too off-balance. Although it is rare for the following behavior to continue after I explain the importance of following directions for the balancing exercise, some learners think it's funny to fall or hop across the room even though they are told to remain stationary in one spot with NO hopping or falling. For their safety, any learners not participating correctly in this exercise will be told to sit down and observe the others if an adult is not in the room to make sure directions are followed for this one exercise. I like for learners to have fun in my class, but need to have these rules and parental guidance in place. This very brief exercise is beneficial as well as fun and safe when done correctly. The safe guards I have in place for it are also great practice for listening and following directions. If your learner(s) have a physical reason they cannot participate they can observe or, if given prior notice, I can do an alternate exercise.
Pre-Requisites
**Prior to taking this class, learners need to know shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle), the meaning of the prepositions: top, bottom, middle, above, below, next to, around, across & able to write their first name & know their age.

I have a M.S. degree in speech-language pathology and earned a Master's level teaching certification. I am also an Interactive Metronome (IM) Certified Provider. IM is a computer based brain fitness training program. We can all benefit from practice in listening for details, as well as, improving our brain fitness.
