Homework
1-2 hours per week. Students will receive weekly homework assignments designed to reinforce the skills covered in class. This includes writing prompts, planning exercises, and executive function drills. Students may also receive personalized feedback on their writing to help guide improvement.
Assessment
If requested, I will offer detailed feedback on each student’s strengths and areas for improvement, including personalized next steps to guide further study and test preparation.

Join "Executive Function Skills and High School English: Writing With A Plan" to develop essential executive function skills that will elevate your high school writing. Designed for students aged 14-18, this course will focus on practical strategies to improve planning, organization, and time management—critical skills for excelling in English class. By mastering these executive function skills, students will be able to write with confidence and ease, whether for essays, research papers, or literature analysis. This class not only boosts writing performance but also helps students apply these skills across all their academic subjects.

What Will Be Taught?

Each class will cover key executive function skills in the context of high school English and writing:
•	Strategies for planning and organizing essays and other writing assignments.
•	Time management techniques for completing writing tasks efficiently.
•	Approaches to staying focused and motivated while writing.
•	Techniques for analyzing literature and developing strong thesis statements.
•	Practical exercises to apply executive function skills to writing and literature assignments.

Class Structure:

This class meets once a week for 55 minutes, with each session dedicated to a specific theme. Classes include:

•	Interactive Discussions: Students share writing challenges and collaborate on solutions.
•	Executive Function Drills: Weekly exercises to enhance planning, organization, and focus.
•	Writing Activities: Engaging tasks to practice skills in real-world writing scenarios.
•	Real-World Applications: Learn how executive function skills extend beyond English class into everyday academic life.

Lesson 1:
Planning and Organizing Your Writing
 Learn how to break down assignments, set goals, and organize your writing effectively. These skills benefit not only high school English but also all academic tasks. We will work on setting SMART goals, planning time for revisions, making realistic time estimates for writing tasks, and recognizing your own personal writing pace.

Lesson 2:
Time Management for Writing Success
 Develop strategies for managing your time during writing assignments. This lesson focuses on techniques to stay on track and meet deadlines with less stress. We will work on “chunking” tasks, finding what works for you – like “eating the frog” or “three tasks”, developing accountability both internally and externally, and using methods like pomodoro timers to focus when managing time.

Lesson 3:
Analyzing Literature with Confidence
 Learn how to read literature critically and develop strong thesis statements. These skills are essential for writing effective essays and literature analysis papers. We will work on developing repeatable structures to limit the mental load of the initial planning work for essays. This will allow students to set realistic time management goals and avoid the trap of allowing the first steps to become overwhelming.

Writing with Focus and Motivation
 Discover ways to stay focused and motivated while writing. This final session integrates all executive function skills learned in the course, ensuring students are ready to tackle any writing challenge.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This course includes discussions of test-related stress and anxiety, as well as practical strategies for improving focus and time management. Parents are encouraged to participate in conversations at home to help students apply these executive function skills beyond the classroom.
