Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
In this ongoing 1:1 tutoring class, learners will receive private tutoring in reading, strictly reading, the foundation of any learner's success in school as well as in life.

1:1 Private Reading Tutor - Strictly Reading With Reid is a comprehensive course that zeroes in right where the learner is, whether a young learner hasn't begun to read just yet but really has the desire to, or is just beginning to read, or is reading but wants to sharpen their reading strategies and skills and become an even better reader, a fluent reader, an excellent reader.

1:1 Private Reading Tutor - Strictly Reading With Reid is designed for each specific learner and what they need, reaching each learner where they are, assessing their present level and administering 1-on-1 instruction to improve their reading skills, reading fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. The consistent format used each week will help learners grow their reading skills, expose them to different reading passages, stories, rhymes and tales appropriate to the learner's reading level and designed to take the learner to a new level. Learners are assisted with pronunciation, tone, accuracy, pace and expression, answering and asking questions that will help grow the learner's comprehension.

Great for ELA and ESL learners.

The youngest learners, as emerging pre-readers will begin with letter and sound recognition, phonemic awareness, CVC and sight words, rhyming patterns, phonics, blending and decoding sounds, forming words, shared reading, picture reading, ask and answer questions, visualization, word games, a lot of talking and language play.

The the novice reader [5 to 7 years old] and the decoding reader [7 to 9 years old] will engage in three important ingredients of reading fluency: rate/pace, accuracy, and expression. They will build automatic decoding skills, vocabulary, reading comprehension so they begin understanding what they read, build phonological and phonemic awareness. The end GOAL is a fluent reader who reads aloud effortlessly with expression and confidence.

Passages will increase in complexity as learners continue with their 1-on-1 private tutoring. We'll start off simple so learners are not frustrated with reading challenges as they work through developing and honing their newly learned reading skills of understanding letters and sounds, comprehension, identify meanings of words, learn new vocabulary, and practice oral reading across different genres.

I'll assess younger learners, and any learner who needs to build a stronger skills foundation, to see if they know letters, consonants, vowels, the sounds they make, able to decode words, sight words, and begin blending sounds together to form words. As we build a solid phonetic foundation, young learners will begin writing two-word sentences, then on to longer complete sentences and begin reading.

Young learners [age 5 & 6 years] should have a dry erase white board, two complete sets of magnetic alphabet letters [upper case letters A-Z] and a lower case set of magnetic alphabet letters [a-z], dry eraser marker and eraser.

Learners 7 & 8 should have a white board, dry eraser marker and eraser. Additionally 8 year olds should have a notebook dedicated for new concepts learned, along with pencil/pen.

Essential reading skills will be taught that will help learners use the text to answer questions, identify main idea of a passage, order of events, describe how characters affect stories and the role they play, begin to understand logical connections, give the facts of the passage and learn to give their opinion. We'll have fun too, reading fun stories together, crosswords, puzzles, fill-in-the blanks activities, pair reading, singing and playing fun educational games appropriate to the learner's level and ability. For learners 7.5+ years old, instruction will include, but not limited to how sentences are structured in a story, reading comprehension, vocabulary development, reading and understanding poems, nursery rhymes, fairy tales and short stories. Lots of practice with oral reading.

1:1 Private Reading Tutor - Strictly Reading With Reid is just that, strictly reading to grow and enhance the learner's reading ability. Here, the learner will read, read, read orally independently and with their teacher. The idea here is to support your learner, right where they are, guide and build skills so that the learner becomes a confident reader at a proficient reading level.

It is highly encouraged that learners continue their 1-on-1 private tutoring week after week or even two times a week until parents feel their learner has grown to their expected reading level.

45-minute tutoring sessions are available for learners Grades 4-10: 1:1 Private Reading Tutor - Strictly Reading With Reid - Grades 4-10 [ELA/ESL] https://outschool.com/classes/7d9d719e-44cb-439b-94d6-97d96cf36c28/schedule

Hello, I'm Paula Reid and happy to meet you and be able to privately tutor your child/ren. I've been in the education field all my life it seems, from helping my classmates finish their lessons when I was in second grade, well actually tutoring them when they needed help in a subject. I loved helping my classmates so much that it stuck with me throughout my schooling until I became a teacher maximizing my passion to teach children. Later on I became a Principal. I just love teaching! I love children of all ages and I love seeing learners become the best that they can be . . . and it happens through great parenting, education, phenomenal teaching and even with the help of a dedicated tutor.

My every day goal is to help people, to learn something new each day and teach something to someone; additionally to help students love learning, become life-long learners and develop a healthy, global view of our world.

I love life, traveling, reading, music, photography, theater, adventure and I'll love teaching and tutoring your learner in this one-on-one private tutoring session/s, really getting to know each learner and help them get to their best academic level.

Because I am an avid reader myself, and have been all my life, I value the opportunity to teach children of all ages how to read and enjoy it. I have that opportunity here on Outschool and hope to have the privilege of tutoring your learner one-on-one in reading.
