US Grade 3 - 4
In this ongoing class, learners will improve their spelling; learn, review, practice grade appropriate spelling words; learn, apply spelling-families, spelling patterns, spelling rules and learn dictionary skills to foster better spelling. Each week, learners will be given a new set of spelling words, a different list of words where we'll target spelling patterns, spelling-families and rules and apply these to each word on their spelling list. Learners will simultaneously build a vocabulary of new words and be able to spell them too. They will learn dictionary skills: how to look up words, their definitions, synonyms, antonyms, homophones of words, multiple meanings, parts of speech, word roots, word history, and construct sentences using their spelling words. They will build a foundation for regular writing, giving learners a head start on spelling, punctuation and other concepts and give them a great understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds. Learners will be given a new spelling list at the beginning of each week on Sunday, giving them time to look over the new list and begin reviewing the list and learn to spell each word on the list. They will be given exercises and activities to complete during the week which will help strengthen their ability to spell words from their list. Occasionally learners will engage in spelling games, spelling crosswords puzzles, and friendly spelling bee competition with the other learners in the class. Learners are encouraged to create a set of flash cards each week and continue practicing the words after class ends and throughout the week and the year. If learners complete the course, they will have a complete set of over 600 words that they've been presented with and learned. Pop quizzes may be given from time-to-time. Each session has new material so learners can begin at any time. This course is ongoing and thirty [30] lessons are taught throughout the year. Learners benefit most by transitioning through all thirty lessons. When learners are ready to take a course designed primarily to learn spelling rules, learners can transition to my "Uncover Spelling Secrets: Becoming a Confident Speller." Class format may look like this: 👀 See it! 👀 Learners see the word from their spelling list 🗣️ Say it! 🗣️ Learners read each word together with Teacher and learners 🗣️ Learners say the word [from their spelling list] 🗣️ Blend sounds in the word Learners split the word into syllables and sounds Learners identify the number of sounds they hear Learners identify individual sounds ✍️Spell it! ✍️ Learners spell the word/s out loud ✍️ Learners blend and check their spelling 🏁 Repeat It! 🏁Repeat 📝 Use It! 📝 Apply it Apply patterns, rules, sentences and previous knowledge Spell the word In each session, learners we will practice spelling words while applying the patterns and the rule learned and apply this in sentences they create using their own whiteboard, giving each learner numerous opportunities to show their work. Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Indiana University
I am a retired public school Principal who has taught and written curriculum for grades K-12 in all subject areas. I have taught learners from grades K-12, Special needs learners, adults, ESL learners from several countries it seems for most of my life. Teaching children is what I love to do! And teaching learners of all ages to read, write and spell is foundational to success and is my passion. I personally love spelling and enjoyed spelling competitions since I was a little girl. Trust me, I practiced my spelling list / words and made sure I got an A+ on each test. So when faced with competition, I was ready!
I love to work with children in all subject area [reading, writing, science, cooking to name a few] but teaching them to read, write and spell are my favorite. Seeing the "lights" come on as a learner "gets it," understands the spelling rule and WHY words are spelled as they are is what I love most and love being a part of that experience is so very gratifying.
I am very happy to be teaching on the Outschool platform and look forward to my passion for reading, writing and spelling, in particular, rubbing off on your learner.
