In this violin program, we will learn the fundamentals of violin playing. Students will learn proper posture, how to hold the violin, place the fingers, plucking the strings, or pizzicato, how to hold the bow, how to read and write music notes in treble clef, count rhythm and beats, as well as learning the basic musical concepts, such as dynamics, pitch, contrast and tempo. All these skills are essentially inter-related to all things pertaining to violin playing. We will dive into playing our first few tunes on the violin. Students, with the help of parents, will learn how to maintain and to tune the strings of the violin using a tuner (free downloaded app). This will eventually be done by the students as they gain proficiency in recognizing the accuracy of the pitch of each of the 4 strings on the instrument. There will be a lot of occasions for teacher demonstrations of skills, interactions to check for understanding. Essentially, a mini practice session is built into each lesson, so students know exactly what and how to practice on their own. A video tutorial for each lesson will be provided for student to practice along for the week. Students will submit a short video of their practice and share with the class. This will be the basis for peer critiques and discussions, an occasion to learn from one another. Prior experience with a musical instrument, vocal, dance,or drawing are helpful, but not a requirement.

Greetings to all parents and students! I am very excited to share my passion of making music and violin performance as a teacher at Outschool with you! I will share a little bit of background story about myself so you can get to know me. I have been playing the violin for over 35 years, and have been teaching for more than 25 years. I have worked with children from preschoolers to adults! Yes, I do teach in group settings as well as individual lessons. All ages, all levels! I founded and directed and a violin program, The Little People Violin House. All the materials were tailored to each age group, that was an absolutely amazingly fun 10 years of experience I had! Now I have transformed all these precious experiences into the Violin Studio with Sharon!
I was born in Hong Kong, and currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Yes, I speak fluent English, Mandarin and Cantonese, and in fact, I have also taught ESL English, Mandarin and Cantonese
Classes! I received my earlier musical training at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. During my study at the Conservatory of Music at University of Cincinnati and at Brooklyn College, some of the teachers that had profound influence on my violin playing were the renowned Prof. Igor Ozim, Prof Kurt Sassmanshaus, Itzark Perlman, Maoso Kawasaki and Mela Tenenbaum.
I have been an active violin performer in the greater New York area and have been an active member of Music Under New York since 2018. In 2019 I joined the Times Square Alliance, NYC.
I enjoy performing the 'Concert from My Living Room' series on multiple virtual platforms. IThe 'Violin Studio with Sharon' is now providing invaluable resources for violin students of all levels in which I discuss my musical approach and technical elements pertaining to violin playing on a selected musical work.
I am excited to find a community on Bandcamp and Patreon to share my solo violin performances.
I am very excited and looking forward to meeting each one of you over the zoom platform and start out violin journey together !
