Class Experience

US Grade 2
This course is the first of four sessions and is designed for students ready to learn math at the second grade level. Students should be able to write and count to 100, skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and be able to follow along with on-screen instruction. They should also know how to annotate, use the chat feature, and pin videos on Zoom.

As a veteran second grade teacher, I know well the importance of relating math to real life experiences, using manipulatives for hands-on experience, and the value of quality instruction combined with guided practice, and independent practice. I believe that the concepts learned in second grade will lay the foundation for future success with higher levels of math. I like to make math come alive for students and see them truly understand each concept! I do this in a number of ways, including starting each unit with a story to introduce the concept and provide a common frame of reference for every learner.

In this class, we will explore patterns, number permanence, place value, patterns in numbers, addition facts through ten, comparing numbers, experiment with various number models, and learn to count dimes, nickels, and pennies.

The class will be taught over ZOOM with the teacher modeling concepts and employing the use of hands-on manipulatives and visuals. Students will utilize their own hand-son manipulatives from the indicated math kit. Students will practice the content each day and follow up with a workbook page each night. Quizzes on content will be given periodically using Google Forms and/or Whiteboard.fi.

The course agenda is as follows:

Week 1: Patterns
Week 2: Number Permanence
Week 3: Addition
Week 4: Number Models
Week 5: Place Value and Patterns in Numbers
Week 6: Counting Dimes, Nickels, and Pennies
