US Grade 3

Intermediate Level

In spelling, we will study word endings, diphthongs /oi/ an d/ou/, homophones, contractions, easily misspelled words and more!  We will practice with dictionary skills, pronunciation marks, prefixes, and dropping the y before adding -ies to make words plural.

In reading, we will continue to work on decoding unfamiliar words, determining meaning of new vocabulary words, and strengthen our comprehension of both fiction and nonfiction texts.

In language arts, we will review punctuation and proofreading marks and learn about subject-verb agreement, irregular plurals, irregular verbs, past and future tenses of verbs, homophones, contractions, double negatives, and more!

Each class covers all three subject areas with students choosing the text for reading on Fridays from leveled readers on Reading A-Z.  Homework may be completed in class or assigned for outside of class.

We will enhance our lessons with additional games, pictures, and activities to support mastery of the targeted skills.  Our lessons are based in direct instruction followed by guided practice and independent practice of new skills.

There is lots of discussion and application of learned topics.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to punctuate sentences correctly in their independent writing.

Students will be able to comprehend what they read and answer questions about the text.
