Class Experience

US Grade 2
If you're looking for an all-in-one reading, spelling, and language arts class for your second grade level child, look no further! This course has it all! Designed to be a year-long class, this course is divided into 4 sessions each lasting 8 weeks. We will use reading texts from Spectrum Second Grade Reading Workbook, as well as texts from Reading A-Z. Our spelling and language arts texts will also be from the Spectrum series.

We will begin each class with a review of that week's spelling words and complete a Spectrum page to support their mastery. We will then read a text from the Spectrum Reading Workbook with a focus on decoding and comprehension skills. We will end with a language arts lesson and complete a Spectrum page with that as well. We will enrich each lesson with games, discussion, and both guided and independent practice.

We end each week with a spelling assessment and a visit to https://www.readinga-z.com/ where students take turns choosing from a variety of leveled books which are screenshared in class and then posted as PDFs in the classroom for printing at home, if desired. I am in no way affiliated with Reading A-Z and do not benefit personally in any way from its use, but parents are welcome to preview the site as desired.

I have used this approach with my students and have seen them make amazing progress! They learn to love reading and writing and begin to develop confidence in their abilities to do so. The stories and other texts spark great discussions, thus strengthening their speaking skills and expanding their vocabulary at the same time! My focus on comprehension skills such as context clues, re-telling, story elements such as setting, characters, plot, and non-fiction text features helps them learn to look at a text both in part and as a whole.

Aligned with most state standards, this course will help your emergent reader SHINE!
