1-2 hours per week. Students will have weekly web quests and discussion questions posted to the classroom 1 week prior to the beginning of each live class.Assessment
Students will be assessed using weekly quizzes posted in Google Classroom (40 points), weekly discussion board participation (20 points) and Unit Exit Summary (40 points) Weekly instructor feed back will be submitted to students via the Outschool messaging app. The rubric for the summary will be posted upon class enrollment. Homework for the course can be completed with feedback up to one month after the course is completed.Class Experience
US Grade 7 - 10
Together learners will explore the basic concepts of marine ecology. Concepts in this course provide a deeper look into the physical characteristics of coral reefs and the interactions between organisms of these ecosystems and their habitat. This course is part of a series in marine ecology which include: Introduction to Marine Ecology, Estuary Expeditions and Coral Reef Connections. Each week students will be assigned a web quest and online classroom discussion to serve as a leaping point for live class discussion and concept exploration. Class time will include a combination of ppt presentations, student collaboration and concept application. Weekly web quests and discussion questions will be posted one week before live class time is scheduled.
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe the organisms of open water, mid-water and deep sea ecosystems.
- Describe the adaptations of organisms with in the epipelagic, mid-water and deep sea ecosystems as they relate to physical and chemical environmental changes.
- Describe the importance of seafloor hydrothermal vents to deep sea ecosystems.
