Next-Level Reading With Tricky Letter Teams! Group Class to Study Diphthongs

In this 5-week small-group course we focus on and reading with diphthongs such as [oo, ew, au, aw, oi, oy]. This class helps young readers reach the next level after CVC words and also helps with spelling. Come join us!

5 live meetings
2 hrs 30 mins in-class hours
Mastery Evaluation
1 hour per week. Weekly feedback sent to parents after class.
Assessment
Teacher will check for understanding each week through informal assessments in which learners will show understanding through participation. During class on week 5, learners will be assessed on their spelling via writing in the chat. and on phonics implementation of all diphthongs by reading aloud.

Diphthongs can be a challenge for young readers!
In this 5 week class, we practice integrating diphthongs  [aw, au, ew, oo, oi, oy, ou, ow] into our reading, spelling and writing. Learners connect as we integrate phonics into games, matchup activities, reading, and spelling. We use a fun, interactive slideshow in which learners participate verbally and in writing to share their thinking. Come join us for integral phonics learning in a welcoming atmosphere!

Learners can recognize and make the sounds of the following diphthongs [aw, au, ew, oo, oi, oy, ou, ow]
Learners can describe and implement spelling rules for all diphthongs covered in this class.

Lesson 1:
Let's use [aw and au]
 -Read, spell, and write with the [aw] af paw and the [au] of haul
- Learn the spelling rule for aw/au and practice spelling words on our own
-Word differentiation activities
-Reading comprehension passages using aw/au
-Real world connection: hauling things and types of paws and claws

Let's use [ew and oo]
 -Read, spell, and write with the [ew] of new and the [oo] of moon
- Learn a spelling guideline for oo/ew and practice spelling words on our own
-Word differentiation activities
-Reading comprehension passages using ew/oo
-Real world connection: Things that make us say "ew"

Lesson 3:
Let's use [oy and oi]
 -Read, spell, and write with the [oi] of voice and the [oy] of boy
- Learn the spelling rule for oi/ay and practice spelling words on our own
-Word differentiation activities
-Reading comprehension passages using oy/oi
-Real world connection: toys- Lego architecture

 -Read, spell, and write with the [ow] of cow and the [out] of mouse
- Learn the spelling rule for oi/ay and practice spelling words on our own
-Word differentiation activities

Other Details

Pre-Requisites
To get the most out of this class, learners should be able to independently read CVC words such as cat and run, CVCE words, such as cake and bite, and know enough sight words to read simple sentences independently.
