I’d like to do some formal assessing to inform my teaching. Letter sounds and phonemic awareness to begin with.

There are mini-assessments that I do after each full lesson (two days).

Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3

Beginner Level

*blending letter sounds (reading)
*segmenting letter sounds (spelling)
*new phonics concepts
*practicing the new concept in both reading and spelling formats
*review of previously taught concepts to retain what has been learned in previous lessons

This class is quick paced and it builds on previous lessons.  I like to keep things lighthearted and positive.  There is a place for making errors and risk-taking.  We learn from our mistakes.  I create a caring atmosphere for children to feel comfortable to learn to read.  

There is lots of interaction, some instruction, lots of practice and some games.  If the parents want a take-home practice I can make that available as well.

Pre-Requisites

This class is for students who know most of their letter sounds.

I’ve used this program for two years in the classroom as a literacy specialist in a public school.  I worked closely with the classroom teachers and we found it to be highly effective with all students but especially with those students who needed intervention.  I have taught for over 10 years.  I taught grade 1 for a year and have been a literacy specialist for 9 years.
