We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. In the grade 3 Writing Strategies class, students will be taught fundamental skills to enhance their writing abilities. These include organizing their ideas effectively using topic sentences, understanding the purpose behind their writing, utilizing linking words to improve coherence, and incorporating opinion writing with descriptive details to strengthen their compositions. By focusing on these key areas, grade 3 students will develop essential writing skills that will serve as a foundation for their future academic and personal writing endeavours. Topics covered include: - Organizing Writing and Topic Sentences: Students will learn to structure their writing with clear introductions, supporting details, and concluding statements. They will practice creating topic sentences that encapsulate the main idea of each paragraph and guide the reader through their writing. - Writer's Purpose: Understanding the writer's purpose involves recognizing different types of writing (e.g., narratives, expository texts, persuasive) and tailoring their writing accordingly. Students will explore how the purpose influences their choice of language, tone, and structure. - Linking Words: Linking words and phrases are crucial for connecting ideas and creating smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs. Students will learn various linking words such as conjunctions (e.g., and, but, so), transitional phrases (e.g., however, therefore), and adverbs (e.g., consequently, furthermore) to enhance the flow of their writing. - Opinion Writing and Descriptive Details: Students will practice expressing their opinions clearly and persuasively. They will learn to support their viewpoints with relevant reasons and evidence. Additionally, students will focus on incorporating descriptive details, such as sensory language and vivid imagery, to make their writing more engaging and descriptive. Class Structure: The class will be structured around interactive lessons that engage students through a variety of activities such as instructional sessions where students work with the teacher to apply newly learned skills, writing opportunities for students to practice writing independently, applying the techniques learned, and analyzing texts and discussing strategies for effective writing. My teaching method will be dynamic and hands-on, as I will model writing techniques through examples and shared writing activities, provide step-by-step guidance and support as students practice new skills, encourage peer collaboration and discussion to deepen understanding, and provide constructive feedback to help students refine their writing. My teaching style emphasizes active participation, critical thinking, and creativity. I strive to create a supportive learning environment where students feel encouraged to take risks in their writing and express their ideas confidently. Students will have ample opportunities to interact with me through classroom discussions, conversations during writing exercises, and collaborative activities.
