Class Experience

US Grade 3
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In this grade 3 Grammar and Mechanics class, students will learn many language skills that will allow them to become confident in their reading and writing skills. The class will provide students with essential language skills, ensuring they can confidently use sentences, understand parts of speech, apply correct punctuation and capitalization, and utilize various grammatical structures effectively in their writing and communication. Topics covered include:

- Sentences, Fragments, and Run-ons: Students will learn to distinguish between complete sentences, fragments, and run-on sentences. They will practice constructing complete sentences and identifying errors in fragments and run-ons.

- Order the Words to Create a Sentence: This topic focuses on sentence structure and word order. Students will practice arranging words in correct grammatical order to form meaningful sentences.

- Parts of Speech: Students will study the different parts of speech such as nouns, verbs (verb type and tense), adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections. They will learn the role of each part of speech in constructing sentences.

- Use of Reflexive Pronouns: Grade 3 students will learn about reflexive pronouns (e.g., myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves) and how they are used in sentences to reflect back to the subject.

- Subject-Verb Agreement and Pronoun-Verb Agreement: Students will understand the importance of agreement between subjects and verbs in sentences. They will also learn about ensuring agreement between pronouns and their antecedents.

- Identify Subordinating Conjunctions: This topic involves recognizing and using subordinating conjunctions (e.g., because, although, if, since, until, when) to connect dependent clauses to main clauses in complex sentences.

- Contractions: Grade 3 students will learn about contractions (e.g., can't, didn't, won't) and how they are formed by combining two words and replacing missing letters with an apostrophe.

- Formatting, Punctuating, and Capitalization: Students will learn about basic rules for formatting written text, including using proper punctuation marks (comma, period, question mark, exclamation mark) and capitalizing letters correctly (at the beginning of sentences, proper nouns, etc.).

Class Structure:

The vocabulary class will be structured around interactive activities, exercises, and discussions to reinforce learning. Each session will begin with a review of previous topics and a brief introduction to the new topic. The class will incorporate a mix of individual work, group activities, and teacher-led instruction.

My teaching method will be hands-on, encouraging active participation and engagement. Concepts will be explained using examples and visual aids to ensure clarity. Practice exercises will be provided to reinforce learning and assess comprehension.

My teaching style will be supportive and encouraging, and providing a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their ideas. I will use a variety of teaching methods, including direct instruction, guided practice, and collaborative learning to engage my students interests.

Students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with me through discussions, question and answer, and collaborative activities. They will work individually and in groups to apply what they've learned, share their understanding, and receive feedback. This interactive approach will help students build confidence in using vocabulary and grammar concepts effectively.
