Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Welcome to our Montessori Math class for Grades 1-3! This dynamic program is designed to build a strong foundation in mathematics through engaging, hands-on activities. By incorporating Montessori principles, children will develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts while enjoying a stimulating learning environment.

We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In this class, students will explore key mathematical concepts tailored to their developmental stage, including the decimal system, fundamental operations, numeration, algebraic thinking, and data management. The Montessori approach emphasizes hands-on learning and conceptual understanding, providing a robust framework for future mathematical study. Students will engage in activities that make abstract concepts concrete and accessible, promoting a thorough grasp of each topic.

Topics Covered

Number Concepts: Students will explore number concepts such as; odd and even, greater than and less than, and ordinal or cardinal numbers. This will help build a solid foundation for later math work.

Decimal System: Students will learn to recognize and work with the decimal system, understanding place value and how numbers are organized and manipulated within this system.

Operations: We will cover basic arithmetic operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—using concrete materials to illustrate these processes and build computational fluency.

Memorization: Emphasis will be placed on developing number facts and tables through engaging and interactive methods to enhance memory and recall.

Numeration: Students will explore different ways of representing numbers and their relationships, which will support their understanding of more complex mathematical concepts.

Algebra: Introduction to simple algebraic concepts will help students begin to solve equations and understand variables through age-appropriate, hands-on activities.

Fractions: Students will learn about fractions using visual and tactile materials to grasp concepts such as part-to-whole relationships and equivalent fractions.

Data Management: Basic data management skills, including sorting, organizing, and interpreting simple data sets, will be taught through practical and engaging activities.

Money: Students will gain practical lessons on money, learning to recognize coins and bills, understand their values, and practice basic transactions, promoting financial literacy.

Roman Numerals: Children will gain an insight into historical numbering systems while enhancing their number sense and problem-solving skills.

Class Structure

Each class session begins with a brief lecture introducing the day’s topic, followed by a demonstration of the materials and activities. Students will then engage with these materials independently or in small groups, allowing them to explore and apply what they've learned. The teacher will provide real-time feedback and guidance, ensuring that students understand and can effectively use the materials. This structured yet flexible approach supports diverse learning styles and paces.

Our teaching style is fun, engaging, and productive, aiming to make math enjoyable and accessible. We use a variety of interactive methods, including games, discussions, and practical exercises, to keep students motivated and interested. By fostering a positive learning environment, we encourage curiosity and a love for mathematics.

Students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with the teacher and their peers. The small group setting ensures personalized attention, while interactive games, discussions, slides, and video clips enhance the learning experience. This approach allows for active participation and collaboration, making math an engaging and collaborative subject.

Join us in the Montessori Math class for Grades 1-3, where we make learning math an exciting and enriching journey. Through hands-on activities and a supportive environment, students will build a strong mathematical foundation and develop a lifelong appreciation for the subject.
