US Grade 1
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. In the grade 1 Reading Foundations class, students embark on a journey to build essential skills of reading proficiency and comprehension. The class aims to equip students with the skills and confidence needed to become fluent readers and lifelong learners. By providing a structured yet dynamic learning environment, students will build a solid foundation in phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension that prepares them for future academic success. Topics covered include phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, and fluency building through sight word recognition. Specific emphasis will be placed on: - Consonants and vowels: Recognizing and differentiating between consonants (e.g., b, c, d) and vowels (a, e, i, o, u). - Syllables and two-syllable words: Learning to break down words into syllables and understanding words with two syllables. - Rhyming words: Identifying and generating words that rhyme to enhance phonemic awareness. - Blending and segmenting: Practicing blending sounds together to form words and segmenting words into individual sounds for spelling and reading. - Consonant blends, digraphs, and diphthongs: Exploring combinations of consonant sounds (blends), pairs of letters representing one sound (digraphs like "sh" and "th"), and vowel combinations (diphthongs like "oi" and "ou"). - Short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u): Recognizing and pronouncing short vowel sounds in words. - R-controlled words: Learning words where the vowel sound is influenced by the letter "r" (e.g., car, bird). -Sight words: Memorizing and recognizing high-frequency words that appear often in texts. Class Structure: The class is structured to be interactive and engaging where I will introduce new concepts and skills through a interactive lesson, small group activities where we will reinforce skills such as phonics games, sight word practice, and reading comprehension activities. My teaching methods are varied to accommodate different learning styles. I will use a variety of teaching techniques to work with my student's. I will use hands-on activities where we use games and worksheets to reinforce phonics and word recognition skills, demonstrate reading strategies and proper pronunciation of sounds and words, engage student's in discussions about story elements and vocabulary, and use visual aids. My teaching style will be very supportive. I will encourage and motivate my student's to take risks and participate actively in their learning, be responsive, work collaboratively to set goals and celebrate achievements, and provide activities and materials. Student's will have frequent opportunities to interact with me through guided practice, class discussions, games and activities, and feedback sessions.
Learning Goals
Students will demonstrate fluency in identifying and producing the sounds of consonants and short vowels. They will match letters to their sounds in isolation and within words, and begin to apply this knowledge in their reading and writing.
Students will be able to recognize and read a core set of sight words fluently. They will use these words to support comprehension when reading simple texts, and begin to spell and write these words independently.
