US Grade 1
In this Grade 1 Grammar and Mechanics class, students will grasp fundamental aspects of language structure and usage, laying the groundwork for effective communication and writing skills. This class focuses on laying a strong foundation in language skills through interactive and engaging activities, ensuring students develop confidence and proficiency in using grammar rules, forming sentences, and applying mechanics correctly in their writing. We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. Topics covered include: - Parts of Speech (nouns, pronouns, verbs): They will learn to identify these basic building blocks of sentences and understand their roles in conveying meaning. - Verb Tense: Students will explore how verbs change to indicate when an action takes place, including past, present, and future tense forms. - Sentences: They will understand the components of a complete sentence, including subjects and predicates, and how sentences communicate ideas. - Parts of Speech (articles, adjectives, prepositions): Exploring words that modify nouns (adjectives), specify nouns (articles), and show relationships (prepositions) in sentences. - Linking Words: Introduction to conjunctions like "and," "but," "or," "so," and "because," which connect ideas and clauses within sentences. - Contractions: Students will recognize and form contractions, such as combining "is" and "not" into "isn't," to streamline language and writing. Class structure: The class structure is designed to engage students through a series of interactive steps: starting with activities or games to introduce each topic and ensure engagement, followed by mini-lessons that offer concise explanations of grammar rules and mechanics using visual aids like pictures or digital presentations. Students will then participate in practice exercises, applying their knowledge through worksheets, group discussions, or guided writing activities. Each session will conclude with a review to reinforce key concepts and provide opportunities for questions. My teaching method will use a variety of teaching techniques such as demonstrating correct grammar usage and sentence structure through examples and stories, provide structured exercises where students practice identifying parts of speech, using verb tenses, and forming sentences, incorporate games and collaborative activities to make grammar and mechanics enjoyable, and offer constructive feedback to support my students' understanding and growth. My teaching style is supportive and interactive. I will create a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts, use a combination of visual aids, verbal explanations, and hands-on activities to cater to different learning styles, and create lessons based on student responses and adjust my teaching strategies to meet all learning needs. Students will interact actively with me and their peers through class discussions, group activities, one-on-one guidance during exercises, and during feedback sessions.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify and differentiate between nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and other basic parts of speech in sentences. They will learn to differentiate between common and proper nouns, and correctly use the forms in sentences.
Students will practice writing complete sentences with a subject and a predicate, focusing on sentence structure. They will develop an understanding that a subject tells who or what the sentence is about and predicate tells what the subject is doing.
