US Grade 2
Our Grade 2 English Reading Fluency class, will build learners' reading literacy skills by mastering foundational phonics, phonological awareness, and decoding. They'll engage in structured lessons and fun activities to enhance reading fluency and comprehension. This course strengthens key skills essential for confident reading. We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. Topics covered include: - Syllables and Two-Syllables: Learning to identify syllables in words and understand words with two syllables, which aids in pronunciation and spelling. - Rhyming: Recognizing and generating words that rhyme to develop phonemic awareness and understand sound patterns in language. - Consonant Blends, Digraphs, and Diphthongs: Exploring combinations of consonants that blend together (e.g., "bl," "dr"), pairs of consonants that form a single sound (e.g., "sh," "th"), and vowel combinations that create unique sounds (e.g., "oi," "ou"). - Short and Long Vowel Patterns: Differentiating between short vowel sounds (e.g., "cat," "bed") and long vowel sounds (e.g., "cake," "ride"), and understanding how vowel patterns affect pronunciation and meaning. - Silent "e" Vowel Sounds and Soft "g" and "c" Sounds: Learning about the silent "e" that changes the preceding vowel sound (e.g., "bit" to "bite") and understanding the soft sounds of "g" (e.g., "giant") and "c" (e.g., "city"). - R-controlled Words: Practicing reading words where the vowel sound is influenced by the letter "r" (e.g., "car," "her"), improving fluency and decoding skills. - Consonants le: Recognizing words with the pattern "le," where the vowel is followed by a consonant and then an "le" that changes the end sound of a word, enhancing decoding and spelling abilities. - Sight Words: Learning high-frequency words that are commonly used in texts but may not follow regular phonetic rules, which enhances reading fluency and comprehension. Class structure: The class structure will begin with an introduction that includes a review or warm-up activity related to the previous lesson. Mini-lessons will provide focused instruction on each topic using visual aids, examples, and interactive demonstrations. Students will then engage in guided practice through hands-on activities, worksheets, or small group work to apply new skills and concepts. Independent practice will involve reading assignments or tasks where students can practice new skills individually. The lesson will conclude with a closure segment that summarizes and reinforces key concepts through discussion or review activities. My teaching methods will include demonstration, where I model correct pronunciation, decoding strategies, and word analysis techniques, as well as active engagement by encouraging participation through questions, discussions, and interactive activities. My teaching style is supportive and interactive, fostering a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable exploring and applying new reading skills. Students will interact actively with me and their peers through class discussions, group activities and individual guidance.
Learning Goals
Students will expand their phonics knowledge by learning vowel digraphs, diphthongs, and common word patterns. They will accurately read multisyllabic words, apply phonetic rules to unfamiliar words, and demonstrate fluency in reading age-level texts.
Students will master the recognition and pronunciation of digraphs and diphthongs. They will confidently apply their understanding of digraphs and diphthongs to decode and spell words accurately in both reading and writing tasks.
