Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In Reading Foundations, the focus is on building essential literacy skills that prepare children for more advanced reading and comprehension. In this class, we focus on reading foundations including letter-sound relationships, teaching how letters represent sounds and how these sounds blend to form words; sight words, introducing and practicing common words that do not follow regular phonetic rules; and reading fluency, focusing on developing the ability to read with accuracy, speed, and expression. Topics covered include:

- Letter identification and association: Learning to recognize uppercase and lowercase letters and their corresponding sounds.
- Sight word recognition: Memorizing and reading high-frequency words that appear often in texts.
- Phonics: Understanding the relationship between letters and sounds to decode words.
- Short vowels (a, e, i, o, u)

Class structure:

The class is structured to be interactive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate for senior kindergarteners. It includes interactive read-alouds where I read stories and ask questions to promote comprehension and critical thinking, and small group activities where students engage in phonics games, sight word games, and word building with manipulatives.

I will teach through hands-on-activities by using flashcards, manipulative, and games to reinforce learning. Along with this, I will use modelling techniques where I will demonstrate reading strategies and proper letter formation.

My teaching style is nurturing, supportive, and I am enthusiastic about fostering a love for reading and learning. I always create a warm and inviting classroom, that is safe and inclusive. Along with that, I provide routines and clear expectations while allowing for spontaneity and exploration.

Learners will have frequent opportunities to interact with the teacher through various methods such as lessons and discussion, games and activities, or through slides and visual aids.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet. They will demonstrate fluency in identifying and writing letters and connecting them with their respective sounds.
Students will develop the ability to recognize and read a set of high-frequency sight words. They will recognize a core set of sight words automatically, enhancing their reading fluency and comprehension.
