In this Grade 6 Middle School English grammar and writing mechanics class, students will explore English language rules and structures essential for strong writing skills. They'll learn key grammar concepts to strengthen their writing and communication skills. The class aims to provide students with essential language skills that will empower them to express themselves clearly and effectively in both writing and verbal communication. Through a structured curriculum, interactive teaching methods, and personalized support, learners will develop a solid foundation in grammar and mechanics that prepares them for academic success and beyond. We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. The topics covered include: Parts of Speech (Pronouns and Antecedents, Verb Types, Relative Pronouns): Students will learn about the functions of pronouns in sentences, ensuring they agree in number and gender with their antecedents. They will also study various verb types and relative pronouns to enhance their understanding of sentence structure. Sentence Structure (Simple, Compound, or Complex): Students will identify and differentiate between simple, compound, and complex sentences, understanding how each contributes to effective communication in writing. Plural and Possessive Nouns: Students will identify errors in plural and possessive nouns and learn how to correct them to maintain grammatical accuracy in their writing. Subject-Verb Agreement and Compound Subjects: Students will practice ensuring subject-verb agreement in sentences with compound subjects, understanding how to match the verb form to the subject(s) in number and person. Correlative Conjunctions: Students will fill in missing correlative conjunctions to ensure that paired conjunctions (e.g., either/or, neither/nor) are used correctly to connect similar grammatical elements in sentences. Contractions: Students will learn about contractions and when they are appropriately used in writing, as well as how to form and punctuate them correctly. Punctuation, Capitalization, and Using Dashes: Grade 6 students will practice proper punctuation marks, including commas, periods, colons, semicolons, and dashes, as well as capitalization rules, to enhance clarity and organization in their writing. Formatting: Students will learn how to format their writing correctly, including indentation, spacing, font styles, and margins, to meet standard academic and publishing requirements. Class Structure: The class will be structured in a way where students will be introduced to a review at the beginning of each class, provide opportunities for group discussions, peer editing and hands-on exercises to reinforce learning, guided practice where students will practice applying grammar rules through worksheets and writing prompts, and they will engage in writing assignments that require them to demonstrate understanding of grammar concepts in real-world contexts. My teaching method will be student-centered and interactive where I will encourage students to actively participate in grammar exercises, sentence construction, and editing practice, provide constructive feedback on assignments and encouraging revision to improve writing skills, and integrate educational apps, online tools, and multimedia resources to enhance engagement and learning outcomes. Students will have many opportunities to interact with me through regular class discussions, small group activities, and through class exercises.
