Welcome to our Montessori Geometry class for Grades 1-3! Our Montessori Math class introduces young learners to the foundational concepts of geometry through hands-on exploration and dynamic activities. We aim to build a strong understanding of shapes, spatial relationships, and geometric properties while fostering a love for learning. We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada. In this class, students will embark on an exciting journey into the world of geometry. They will explore properties of basic shapes, geometric concepts, and the use of tools. Topics Covered Shapes and Properties: Students will start by identifying and categorizing different shapes, including circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. They will learn about the properties of these shapes, such as the number of sides and angles, and how to classify them accordingly. Angles and Lines: The class will cover different types of angles (acute, obtuse, and right) and lines (parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting). Activities will involve measuring angles and drawing lines using geometric tools. Symmetry and Congruency: Children will explore the concept of symmetry through hands-on activities, learning to recognize and create symmetrical shapes. They will also understand congruency and how to identify shapes that are identical in size and shape. Perimeter, Area, and Volume: Students will learn to calculate the perimeter of various shapes and understand the concept of area for two-dimensional figures. For three-dimensional shapes, they will explore volume and how to measure the space inside geometric solids. Using Tools: Introduction to practical tools like protractors and rulers will help students accurately measure angles and lengths. They will practice using these tools to construct and measure geometric figures. Class Structure Each session begins with a brief, engaging lecture on the topic of the day, providing students with a clear understanding of the concepts. The teacher will demonstrate how to use materials and complete worksheets related to the lesson. Students will then have the chance to explore the concepts independently, with the teacher offering real-time feedback and guidance. This structured approach ensures that learners grasp the material thoroughly and can apply their knowledge confidently. Our teaching style is both fun and productive, focusing on creating an interactive and stimulating learning environment. We believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged and enjoying their experience. By incorporating a variety of activities and exercises, we keep the lessons dynamic and captivating. Students will have numerous opportunities to interact with both their peers and the teacher throughout the class. The small group setting allows for personalized attention and encourages collaborative learning. Our lessons feature interactive games, discussions, slides, and occasional video clips, all designed to enhance understanding and make learning enjoyable. Join us in the Montessori Geometry class, where we make learning about shapes, lines, and measurements an adventure. Through hands-on activities and interactive lessons, we aim to build a solid foundation in geometry, preparing students for future academic success while sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm for the subject.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify and classify two-dimensional shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. They will explore the properties of these shapes, including the number of sides and angles, enhancing their spatial awareness.
Students will explore the concept of planes as flat surfaces that extend infinitely in all directions. They will learn how planes relate to shapes and angles and how to visualize and draw planes in geometric diagrams.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parental guidance and support may sometimes be required to supervise young learners. We may need help using various stationary items (i.e., scissors, stapler etc.), or preparing materials before class.
Supply List
A weekly material list will be provided to you prior to the class, in preparation for the following week of classes. Learners are responsible for having the listed materials on hand and printed worksheets ready. If learners are missing a material, alternative suggestions can be provided. Classes will typically require commonly found household items or stationary such as: pencil, eraser, highlighter, scissors, stapler, glue etc.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
