Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
Welcome to our Foundations of Reading class! Our preschool English reading class is designed to introduce students to the fundamental stages of reading. Through a blend of structured lessons and playful activities, I aim to make the journey of learning to read an exciting adventure for every child.

We are proud to be the first and only accredited Montessori school on the Outschool platform, featuring certified teachers who bring their expertise from our brick-and-mortar school located in Ontario, Canada.

In this class, I will focus on the beginning stages of learning to read. Students will be introduced to the essential components of reading, which will lay a solid foundation for their future literacy skills. My primary goal is to equip learners with the knowledge and techniques necessary to recognize letters, understand their sounds, and start blending these sounds to form words. By the end of the course, students will have a basic grasp of reading words with short vowels and an introduction to sight words. Topics covered include:

- Letter Identification: Students will learn to recognize and name all the letters of the alphabet, both uppercase and lowercase. We will explore the unique shapes and sounds associated with each letter, emphasizing visual and auditory recognition.

- Techniques for Blending Words Together: I will introduce phonemic awareness exercises, helping students understand how to blend individual sounds to form words. This will include fun and interactive activities that make the concept of blending both clear and enjoyable.

Reading Words with Short Vowels: The class will cover the sounds of short vowels (a, e, i, o, u) and practice reading simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. I will use various tools and techniques to reinforce these skills, ensuring that students gain confidence in their reading abilities.

Introduction to Sight Words: Students will be introduced to a selection of common sight words, which are essential for developing reading fluency. I will incorporate these words into our lessons through games, flashcards, and other engaging methods.

Class Structure:

Each class session will begin with a story time where I will read a captivating story to the students. This not only sets a positive and relaxed tone but also serves as a practical demonstration of reading fluency and expression. Following the story, the class will engage in an open discussion about the story, encouraging students to share their thoughts and ideas.

I will introduce the day's topic, using a variety of teaching aids such as slides, video clips, and interactive games. We will work as a class or independently to complete tasks.

My teaching style is fun, engaging, and productive. I believe that learning to read should be an enjoyable experience that stimulates curiosity and fosters a love for reading. By incorporating a mix of lecture, interactive games, multimedia presentations, and hands-on activities, I strive to keep students interested and motivated.

Students will have ample opportunities to interact with me and each other throughout the class. This will happen through open discussions, participating in games, or asking questions during lessons, learners are encouraged to be active participants. Stories, slides, and video clips will also be used to make lessons more dynamic and relatable, ensuring that every student remains engaged and involved.
Learning Goals
Students will expand their vocabulary by learning new words. They will improve in retelling stories using new words, and participating in vocabulary games to reinforce understanding
Students will learn to recognize and name uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet and begin forming letters correctly. They will develop the foundational skills in letter recognition and correct letter formation.
