Middle School Reading and Writing

Over 16 weeks, learners will cover middle school English Language Arts literature and informational texts. This includes response writing, vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension.

This 16 week class will cover literature and informational texts at the middle school level. Students will be challenged to think critically about what they are reading, defend their thinking using the evidence as support, and read a variety of grade-appropriate texts. 

This class is for advanced upper elementary students and middle school students in grades 6-8.

Each week will have a particular skill focus and include a writing response that directly relates to that focus. Students will be provided with a graphic organizer each week that will accompany the text and response writing. 

Class Structure:
Day 1
- Discussion on the essential question for the week
- Mini lesson on focus skill of the week
- Preview the text and challenging vocabulary
- Begin reading the text and discussion

Day 2
- Recap day 1 reading
- Finish reading the text
- Text based discussion with focus on the skill of the week

Day 3
- writing prompt based on the reading and skill of the week
- graphic organizer to guide thinking
- discussion on organization of response
- independent writing time and feedback

*Reading passages will be posted in the classroom prior to the class.
