This is an ongoing class and students can come and go as they need! This class is for fourth and fifth grade students to learn writing, reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Each week will have a specific focus related to fourth and fifth grade ELA standards that will engage students. This is an enrichment class, meant to enhance whatever other curriculum your learner is currently doing. My goal is to make learning FUN but also appropriately challenging. Students will be encouraged to participate, answer questions, and share their thinking in an encouraging atmosphere. Please let me know if your learner prefers not to be called upon. Some weeks will include graphic organizers, grade-appropriate texts, and other handouts that will be posted in the classroom. Students are encouraged to bring a pencil and notebook to class to allow for brainstorming, writing, and other activities. ** Topics will be updated as the class progresses Topics: Week of Oct 21st - Author's Purpose and point of view in informational texts Week of Oct 28th - Informational Writing on topic of choice Week of Nov 4th - Vocabulary and context clues to determine word meaning Week of Nov 11th - Characters and character development in fiction texts Week of Nov 18th - Personal Narrative writing Week of Nov 25th - Author's claim and supporting reasons with evidence Week of Dec 2nd - Drama - Reader's Theater Week of Dec 9th - Root words and word parts Week of Dec 16th - Main idea and supporting details Week of Dec 23rd - No class Week of Jan 6th - Making inferences and using supporting evidence Week of Jan 13th- Summarizing Fiction texts Week of Jan 20th - Literary analysis response writing using evidence Week of Jan 27 - Summarizing nonfiction texts Week of Feb 3rd - Figurative language and analysis / questions Week of Feb 10th - Analyze the sequence of events in a historical text Week of Feb 17th - Identify relationships between ideas in a nonfiction text Week of Feb 24th - Analyze how characters respond to challenges Week of Mar 3rd - Compare the themes of two fiction texts and complete a writing response Week of Mar 10th - Debate writing (persuasive writing with reasons and evidence) Week of Mar 17th - Explore how a fable’s moral is developed through its plot Week of Mar 24th - Explain the main idea and key details of a text Week of Mar 31st - Describe how the setting influences the events in a fiction text
