US Grade 4 - 6
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Join anytime! This course is designed to introduce upper elementary students to the fundamentals of essay writing. Students will learn how to craft well-structured essays in various genres, including narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, and analytical essays. Through engaging lessons and discussions, students will develop their writing skills, learn to organize their thoughts, and express their ideas clearly and effectively. Each week will include a graphic organizer and sentence starters that will help with planning and writing. I will always provide a topic but students are more than welcome to be creative and choose their own topic as well. Since writing an essay can take longer than the class time permits, students can send completed essays to me after class. Essays will be given personal and detailed feedback. This class will circle back in terms of the type of essay we will focus on. However, topics for the essay will always change. Class Goals: ✏️ Understand the basic structure of an essay, including the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. ✏️ Develop strong thesis statements and topic sentences. ✏️ Learn how to use evidence and examples to support their ideas. ✏️ Practice writing different types of essays: narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, and analytical. Class Structure: 1. Greetings and introductions 2. Overview of what kind of essay we are going to write this week 3. Brainstorm topics and choose a topic 4. Complete the planning page (graphic organizer) 5. Essay draft and feedback. Students are encouraged to share bits and pieces of their writing (or whatever they are comfortable with) for feedback. Students will be provided with sentence starters and guidance on how to structure paragraphs, examples, details, etc. Week of Jan 6th - Opinion Essay Week of Jan 13th - Process Essay Week of Jan 20th - Cause / Effect Essay Week of Jan 27th - Review Essay Week of Feb 3rd - Personal Narrative Week of Feb 10th - Compare and Contrast Essay Week of Feb 17th - Descriptive Essay Week of Feb 24th- Informative Essay Week of March 3rd - Problem and Solution Essay Week of March 10th - Persuasive Essay **Topics will be updated as the class progresses
