Hello learners and parents! *if you are brand new to Outschool ask me about getting $20 off your first class! In this ongoing fiddling club the tunes we play come from a wide variety of fiddling traditions, such as Bluegrass, Appalachian old-time, Canadian, Cape Breton, English, Irish, Shetland, Scottish, Cajun, and Western Swing. There will also be some melodys/breaks from bluegrass songs, American folk songs, and classic country songs thrown in as well. Learners will learn about breakdowns, reels, jigs, hornpipes, waltzes, and many more tune types. The material for each class will be posted in the classroom immediately following the previous class (2 weeks prior to the next class), so there is plenty of time for learners to review and practice the tunes before the next meeting! I will post the sheet music and a slow-version recording for the tune for that week in the classroom. To accommodate learners at different skill levels I may at times post two versions of the same tune (an easier beginner version and a slightly more advanced one) and let them choose which one to learn. Though I encourage reading standard notation, learners who play by fret numbers will be accommodated! Sometimes I may include YouTube videos of the tunes or short histories of them, or bios of composers or famous fiddlers as well. This class is geared towards learners at a later beginner level through intermediate. It is best if they have at least six months to a year of experience playing the fiddle/violin for this class. (If your learner is an absolute beginner or wants a more personalized experience please check out my 1:1 classes!) This class is not intended as a substitute for 1:1 lessons. Mandolin players are welcome to join us as well! The tunes currently planned for this year (2025) are: Old Spinning Wheel Beautiful Beautiful Brown Eyes Willafjord Hunting the Buffalo Old Yeller Dog Champagne Polka Ragtime Annie Shoe the Donkey Old Molly Hare/Fairy Dance Blue Ridge Cabin Home Spider Bit the Baby Lady of the Lake Steamboat Quickstep I Still Miss Someone Dance With Me Molly Uncle Joe Seeing Nellie Home The Girl I Left Behind Me Lonesome Moonlight Waltz Morpeth Rant Waltz Across Texas At each class the learners will take turns playing the tune for the previous week if they want to, before we turn our attention to the new tune posted for the week. Then learners will also be given a chance to play tunes of their choice for the rest of the class. They can draw on tunes learned previously in class or others they have learned outside of this class. If there are particular tunes they come across that they would like to learn they are welcome to bring them up to me as well! This class meets every other week (essentially twice a month), although officially listed as weekly. This is a judgement free class, learners are not expected to keep pace with each other, and content does not build. The goal is simply to foster a love of fiddling and enjoy sharing it with others!

Hello parents and learners!

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, pollinator gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!
Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.
I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
