Class Experience

Beginner Level
Hello brand new guitar pickers and parents!

In this six week absolute beginner guitar course we’ll be learning a few simple chord shapes and learn to strum along to some simple beginner children’s songs. Singing or at least humming the tune is encouraged!

This course is designed for learners who are absolute beginners with no prior musical experience, but if your learner has taken some lessons before or plays another instrument already that is great, too! We will start off learning the names for the parts of the instrument and then talk about tuning. (If the learner is very young or brand new to playing guitar they will probably need some help from an adult with getting their instrument in tune).
After that we will be ready to jump in and begin to learn to play! This class is the first in a series which build on each other.

Week one we will learn two chords and two songs, “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “Are You Sleeping, Brother John.”

In subsequent weeks we will learn many other songs, including “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” “London Bridge,” “Ten in the Bed,” “On the Bridge of Avignon,” “The Farmer in the Dell,” and “The Wheels on the Bus, and “Apples and Bananas.” We will also talk about the meanings of common words and terms used in music, such as key, chord, chord progression, etc.

Over the course of these classes we will learn all the most common chord shapes, some of the basics of music theory, and lots and lots of songs. But most importantly your learner will have a lot of fun and be encouraged in their love of music!

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee (USA) and in addition to music I also love raising rabbits, gardening, and reading! I and my husband currently live with our five beautiful children in the state of North Carolina. I am excited to be part of the Outschool family!

Music has always been a big part of my life, starting with classical piano, which I began at age 8, taking private lessons from a professor at the University of Tennessee. Later on, in my teens, my interests shifted to strings and traditional Appalachian and Celtic music. I learned from many people, including bluegrass musician Justin Moses and as a student of Jim Wood at the Jim and Inge Wood School of Music. As a young adult, I worked as a volunteer interpreter at Cade’s Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, teaching park visitors about Appalachian music. I have played professionally for weddings and other events, in restaurant house bands, as well as at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN. I have led traditional music demonstrations for public school classes, in addition to teaching privately for many years.
I am passionate about introducing young people to traditional Appalachian and Celtic music and helping them perfect their skills!
I primarily teach fiddle/violin and Appalachian old-time and Celtic music, but also bluegrass, Western swing and Texas contest-style fiddle. I also play guitar, both standard and Celtic (DADGAD), piano, mandolin, recorder, penny whistle, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and Irish bouzouki.

I see each learner as a unique individual and cater my teaching approach to best suit their needs and interests.
