Class Experience
US Grade 8 - 11
Did you ever wonder what they do to get the lab results ordered by your doctor? Have you wondered how medicine gets developed? Maybe you are curious what a biomedical scientist does? Each week a video lecture will be shared. In the first four weeks, the videos will focus on the method and principle behind some assays (lab tests) in the hospital or reference biomedical labs (Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Blood Bank, and Clinical Microbiology). In the fifth and sixth weeks, I will discuss molecular biology techniques that focus on recombinant DNA. The seventh week, I will cover how vaccines are made and how antibody titers are done. In the last week we will go over the steps in drug discovery. For each week, I will either present a case study or thought questions that learners can discuss via chat on the classroom page. In addition, each week we will have online quiz challenges (Quizlet, Kahoot, Blooket, and Gimkit) reviewing what was discussed in the lecture. Please note this class is also offered as a weekly ongoing class or as a multi-day class (over 4 days for 2 weeks). Week 1: Complete Blood Count (CBC) Blood Test Week 2: Metabolic Panel Blood Test Week 3: Blood Bank Week 4: Clinical Microbiology Week 5: Recombinant DNA Techniques (Cloning) Week 6: Recombinant DNA Techniques (Gene Silencing) Week 7: Vaccines Week 8: Drug Discovery

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Science from Rutgers University and UMDNJ
I am a scientist turned stay at home mom. While getting my Master's degree in Biochemistry, I taught General Biology lab and an Introduction to Molecular Biology Research lab to undergraduates. I have worked as a medical laboratory technician in a hospital and as a biochemist in drug discovery and early phase clinical trials within the pharmaceutical industry. I left that role to stay at home and homeschool my 2e son. Since he was a different learner, we explored all ways of learning and trying to make it fun.
I began teaching online by teaching English to kids in China. I enjoyed it, but Outschool allows me to go back to my scientific roots and share it with others. I hope to design and deliver classes that will share my knowledge from working as a scientist and get learners as interested and excited about science as I am.
