How Is It Tested? (Ongoing)

In this ongoing class, we will learn about experiments done in biomedical labs, molecular biology techniques, and discuss the biology, chemistry, and process of drug discovery. This is great for afterschool enrichment or homeschooling.

Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
Did you ever wonder what they do to get the lab results ordered by your doctor or how medicine gets developed? Maybe you are curious what a biomedical scientist does?

In the first four weeks, I will present the method and principle behind some assays (lab tests) in the biomedical lab. The following two weeks, we will discuss molecular biology techniques. In the last two weeks, we will discuss how some medicines are developed. I will either present a case study or thought questions to encourage discussion during class, then we will play an online trivia game with what we learned.

Week 1: Complete Blood Count (CBC) Blood Test (Sep 21, 2024)
Week 2: Metabolic Panel Blood Test (Oct 5, 2024)
Week 3: Blood Bank (Oct 19, 2024)
Week 4: Clinical Microbiology (Oct 26, 2024)
Week 5: Recombinant DNA Techniques (Cloning) (Nov 2, 2024)
Week 6: Recombinant DNA Techniques (Gene Silencing) (Nov 9, 2024)
Week 7: Vaccines (Nov 16, 2024)
Week 8: Drug Discovery (Nov 23, 2024)

*** This class concludes after 8 weeks and does not cycle back. ***

Master's Degree in Science from Rutgers University and UMDNJ
I am a scientist turned stay at home mom. While getting my Master's degree in Biochemistry, I taught General Biology lab and an Introduction to Molecular Biology Research lab to undergraduates. I have worked as a medical laboratory technician in a hospital and as a biochemist in drug discovery and early phase clinical trials within the pharmaceutical industry. I left that role to stay at home and homeschool my 2e son. Since he was a different learner, we explored all ways of learning and trying to make it fun.
I began teaching online by teaching English to kids in China. I enjoyed it, but Outschool allows me to go back to my scientific roots and share it with others. I hope to design and deliver classes that will share my knowledge from working as a scientist and get learners as interested and excited about science as I am.
