Class Experience

Did you know that the average person will spend a total of 26 years of their life sleeping?! But what happens when something goes wrong with your sleep? A sleep disorder is a change in the way you sleep that can affect your overall health and quality of life. In this one-time class, appropriate for middle and high school students, we will discuss a variety of sleep disorders that are commonly seen. We will look at the science behind each and the treatments that can alleviate the disease.

Each student will interact with the teacher and with other students in class to discuss each sleep disorder taught. Class begins with introducing each sleep disorder (obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, periodic limb movements of sleep, REM behavior disorder, etc.) and seeing video of what the disorder looks like in real life. Students may know someone that a sleep disorder affects. Each student will fill out a worksheet during class and the class will end with a discussion of the worksheet and its answers.

This class features similar topics with The Science of Sleep and The Science of Dreams classes. These classes are encouraged to be taken to enhance students knowledge of the science aspect of sleep.

Please note, fewer numbers of students may result in a shortened class time.

There will be no refunds issued for a student(s) missing class.

I am a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist and have been the Coordinator for a hospital-based sleep lab for the last 14 years. Prior to that, I taught middle and high school science classes for 10 years and have been teaching on Outschool for the last 4 years. I get to combine those two subjects in my Outschool classes. I am very passionate about sleep! Many of the complaints that doctors see coming into their offices during the day, actually have their origins in the patient's sleep. By improving our educational exposure to diseases of our sleep, we will more easily recognize their symptoms and get them treated earlier, improving our life in the process.
