Did you ever wonder what they do to get the lab results ordered by your doctor? Maybe you are interested in gene therapy? Have you wondered how vaccines are made and tested or how medicine gets developed? Maybe you are curious what a biomedical scientist does? In the first week, I will present the method and principle behind some assays (lab tests) that might be ordered by your doctor. The following week, we will discuss molecular biology techniques. First, we will discuss molecular cloning, then look at some gene silencing methods. Next, we will discuss how some medicines are made. We will examine some topics of immunity and review how vaccines are made. Then, in the last class we will discuss the steps to get a drug from discovery to market. Each class I will present either a case study or thought questions to encourage discussion during class. We will play an online trivia game at the end of class with what we learned. Please note this class is also offered as a weekly ongoing class or a FLEX class. Week 1 Day 1: Complete Blood Count (CBC) Blood Test Day 2: Metabolic Panel Day 3: Blood Types Day 4: Clinical Microbiology Week 2 Day 5: Recombinant DNA Techniques (Cloning) Day 6: Recombinant DNA Techniques (Gene Silencing) Day 7: Vaccines Day 8: Drug Discovery

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Science from Rutgers University and UMDNJ
I am a scientist turned stay at home mom. While getting my Master's degree in Biochemistry, I taught General Biology lab and an Introduction to Molecular Biology Research lab to undergraduates. I have worked as a medical laboratory technician in a hospital and as a biochemist in drug discovery and early phase clinical trials within the pharmaceutical industry. I left that role to stay at home and homeschool my 2e son. Since he was a different learner, we explored all ways of learning and trying to make it fun.
I began teaching online by teaching English to kids in China. I enjoyed it, but Outschool allows me to go back to my scientific roots and share it with others. I hope to design and deliver classes that will share my knowledge from working as a scientist and get learners as interested and excited about science as I am.
