Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Haiku is a type of short form poetry originally from Japan. Traditional Japanese haiku consist of three phrases that contain 17 syllables in a 5, 7, 5 pattern In this class, we will explore the formation of a haiku, learn about famous haiku poets such as Basho and learners will compose their own haikus according to the different nature paintings I show them. For example, if we look at the image on this class listing we could say:

Golden morning sun
Illuminates vast mountains
Lonely tree watches

Thus, there is no right or wrong in this class on haiku writing and the children can be as creative as they like. Beautiful vocabulary and the personification of nature will be emphasised and I will provide a list of vocabulary for each image such as pristine, emerald, glistening and towering. No prior experience is needed, all are welcome to this friendly and interactive class. Please bring a piece of paper and a pencil.
