In this short history class we will learn about the fascinating and famous Ancient Greek kingdom of Sparta. We will explore its location, geography and sphere of influence as well as how it differed to other major city states such as Athens. We will look at the unique education system including how young boys trained at the agoge until they were of age to join the army. We will look at the role women had in society as well as the other class divisions that made Spartan society unique in Ancient Greece. Lastly we will look at the major battles that resulted in the fall of Sparta. This class is for beginners and will include slides, realistic animation videos, interactive discussions and quizzes.

Sources
I will refer to and use information from Plutarch’s Sparta as well as the more recent Spartans book by Andrew Bayliss. I will also use informative websites history.com and britannica.com in the creation of the slides. Videos will be sourced from Ted-Ed, History Hub YTTV (age appropriate animated cinematic recreations of Sparta using assassins creed) and the University of Birmingham’s YouTube page. Varied perspectives and an open minded approach will be encouraged and demonstrated in this class.

My name is Maya and I graduated from the University of Oxford with a geography degree in 2013. Since then I have worked in the humanitarian sector for the British Red Cross and worked as a private tutor around the world. I am grateful that I can share my academic interests on Outschool and meet curious learners from around the world.
