This virtual art gallery class will begin with a look at descriptive vocabulary that could be applied to winter paintings such as tranquil, energising, wild, colourful, mesmerising, magical, detailed, simple, abstract, realistic, thought-provoking, atmospheric, aesthetic and more! We will then look at four-five famous paintings which have a winter theme and discuss and describe each painting together after I provide some background on the artist and painting itself. By using adjectives to describe each painting, learners will be encouraged to both look more deeply at the painting and also to practice their descriptive vocabulary. They also have an opportunity to experience how art can make us feel and how different people's interpretations of art can be. The classes are very friendly, supportive and there are no right or wrong answers. Paintings included may be a selection from the following list: Winter Scene on a Frozen Canal by Hendrick Avercamp (1620) Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1565) The Sea of Ice by Caspar David Friedrich (1824) The Drum Bridge and Yuhi Hill at Meguro by Hiroshige (1857) Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps by JMW Turner (1812) Winter Landscape by Edvard Munch (1915) The Magpie by Claude Monet (1868-69) 5 mins: Making a mind map of descriptive vocabulary 30 mins: An interactive look at five famous winter themed paintings from famous artists No prior knowledge needed! This class will be discussion based and use slides and photos of the paintings.
