US Grade 4 - 6
Brilliant Scribbles Word Wave Poetry group is a weekly poetry club to gather, collect and share your creative self with others who love to share, explore, write, and create poetry. There will be three components to these classes; a warm up interactive poetry word game, a demonstration session where the students will learn a new style of poetry and hear some examples, and a sharing session where students will be able to share a piece they have written. Figurative language is used extensively throughout poetry to create imagery, feelings, and emotions and inspire. In this class we will also focus on the types of figurative language and how it can be used to enhance your poetry. Every week we will build our knowledge of figurative language, looking at similes, oxymoron's, onomatopoeia, metaphors, hyperboles, personification, allusions and more. Students will get worksheets, handouts and printables to continue building their knowledge and skills of language and poetry. After we spend a lesson learning a new style of poetry, the students will have the opportunity to write their own poem, in that weeks style, for the next week. At the beginning of the next class, students will share what they have written with the class (if they are comfortable doing this) before learning a new style. Along with this intentional learning, there will be plenty of fun and interactive word games to get the creative juices going. We will gather weekly and work from a different word or theme. I will share the word or theme with you before hand and give you a chance to get creative and compose a piece you would like to share in our weekly get-together. The themes will be quite general, such as a color or place, and you could interpret these in your own personal way, choosing to explore it through your own tones and poetry approach. Anything is possible! Get creative and, the most important thing, stay true to your style. Upcoming classes and themes / words: Week 1 : light / darkness Week 2 : colors Week 3 : sun / moon Week 4 : bees and flowers Week 5 : beaches Week 6 : forests Week 7 : trees Week 8 : shadows Week 9 : sound Week 10 : elements Week 11 : windows & tea In our sharing session, we pass around ideas and personal experiences of how we write our poems, what fills us up, where do we write the best, what tools we may have used to help our creativity, what inspires us to write, how we navigate blocks (if and when they come) and any other ideas we have found which may help others to tap in to their creative poetical side. You will have a chance to share the poetry you have created using your own personal style, expression and approach through your presentation. This is a shared space for creativity and individuality. We always show respect for others and their work, their style, their creativity, and their presentation. As this is an interactive space, I do ask that video cameras are left on during the lessons. It creates an open environment.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This class will have themes or words based on colors, natural places (beaches, mountains, rivers), textures (wood, velvet, fur), etc.
I ask that the same respect for words and assignments in an actual classroom be respected in this space. This is to ensure all the students feel safe with the writings of the others in the group and as a safe space to share their own writings without prejudice or fear.
Supply List
Pens, pencils, color pencils, paper, journals....anything the student would like to creatively write their own poetry. Of course, typed work is fine as well. I will not be looking at the work once complete. The students will share aloud to the class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
