In this ongoing weekly class, children will learn the foundations of the Hebrew language by listening to simple phrases, songs, stories and basic conversation as well as drawing while learning Hebrew vocabulary. Children will: -learn to sing the aleph, bet, vet in Hebrew (Hebrew alphabet song) along with other Hebrew songs; -hear simple stories in Hebrew (ie. nursery rhymes, finger play songs); -learn conversational words and phrases (ie. what is your name, how are you...); -play games (charades and Shimon Omer (Simon Says); -draw pictures and learn the words in Hebrew as we draw; -and try repeating and practicing the Hebrew words. This class is about listening to another language and giving the sounds a go by trying new words (if your child is comfortable to share, I know this can be a bit scary). Children can participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. Young children learn from experiencing new things and language can be experienced through the sounds. The class begins with our welcome song, then the children will listen to some new spoken words told in a variety of different ways. We say simple phrases by repeating what they hear. They may play some games or hear stories or sing simple songs. Children are always encouraged to contribute so they do not need to put themselves on mute. Chatting is not encouraged in class as it can be disruptive to other young children. At the end of the class we sing our farewell song. Worksheets are uploaded after the class with words we have learnt that week so the children may continue to say the words at home. Some children like to draw flashcards with the words, make more drawings practicing the words or singing the songs learned in class. The more the children practice, the more comfortable they will be with the new language. This is an interactive class where children are asked to join in and give the words a try as they immerse themselves in a new language. We will focus on simple conversational phrases and the spoken language. I could tell nursery rhymes and stories in Hebrew, without showing text, so the children can listen to the words. Pictures might be shown during some story telling. I will also use simple finger play with Hebrew words to engage children in activities they may already be familiar with. Drawing is used in class as a way to use the vocabulary we are working on in a practical and hands on way in the moment. Having paper and colored pens or pencils at class every week would be helpful but you can watch the video again after if it is not accessible at class time. Each week will focus on a different area of study. Week 1: Greetings Week 2: Family & Family Members Week 3: All About Me Week 4: Colors Week 5: Food Week 6: Farm Animals Week 7: Ocean Animals Week 8: Wild Animals Week 9: Directions Week 10: Counting Numbers Week 11: Days of the Week Week 12: Aleph, Bet, Vet Week 13: Trips out, out in town... Week 14: Shopping Week 15: Weather and the Seasons Week 16: Emotions, How We're Feeling Week 17: Things at School Week 18: Gardening Week 19: Sports Week 20: Pronouns Week 21: Months of the Year Week 22: Hebrew Vowels Learners are welcome to join in at any time as these are not cumulative classes. Each week is different depending on the lesson and section. My teaching style will change (from simple stories, to songs, to PowerPoints, to puppet shows) depending on the lesson. Every class is different, from drawing to singing, stories to pictures, and interactive games. This is designed to engage all learners who participate in the class.
Learning Goals
Students will engage in a beginning Hebrew language class where they will hear stories and songs in Hebrew, learn new vocabulary words every week, and practice using their own voice to begin basic and simple Hebrew conversations in a safe and supportive environment.
