In this ongoing weekly class, children will learn the foundations of the Hebrew language by listening to simple phrases and words, Hebrew songs, and stories as well as drawing while learning Hebrew vocabulary. I will use simple finger play, songs and stories the children may already be familiar with in English and change a few words into Hebrew to make learning new words easy and accessible. Children will: -learn to sing the aleph, bet, vet in Hebrew (Hebrew alphabet song) along with other Hebrew songs; -hear simple stories in Hebrew (ie. nursery rhymes, finger play songs); -learn conversational words and phrases (ie. what is your name, how are you...); -play games (charades and Shimon Omer (Simon Says); -draw pictures and learn the words in Hebrew as we draw; -and try repeating and practicing the Hebrew words. This class is about listening to another language and giving the sounds a go by trying new words (if your child is comfortable to share, I know this can be a bit scary). Children can participate as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. Young children learn from experiencing new things and language can be experienced through the sounds. The class begins with our welcome song, then the children will listen to some new spoken words told in a variety of different ways. We say simple phrases by repeating what they hear. They may play some games or hear stories or sing simple songs. Children are always encouraged to contribute so they do not need to put themselves on mute. Chatting is not encouraged in class as it can be disruptive to other young children. At the end of the class we sing our farewell song. This is an interactive class where children are asked to join in and give the words a try as they immerse themselves in a new language. Drawing is used in class as a way to use the vocabulary we are working on in a practical and hands on way in the moment. Having paper and colored pens or pencils at class every week would be helpful but you can watch the video again after if it is not accessible at class time. Each week will focus on a different area of study. Week 1: Week of August 1st: Greetings Week 2: Week of August 7th: Family & Family Members Week 3: Week of August 14th: All About Me Week 4: Week of August 21st: Colors Learners are welcome to join in at any time as these are not cumulative classes. Each week is different depending on the lesson and section. My teaching style will change (from simple stories, to songs, to PowerPoints, to puppet shows) depending on the lesson. Every class is different, from drawing to singing, stories to pictures, and interactive games. This is designed to engage all learners who participate in the class.
Learning Goals
Children will hear stories and songs in Hebrew from familiar English songs and learn new vocabulary in Hebrew.
Children may practice using their own voice to say/sing basic and simple Hebrew words.
