This class is for all kids, especially those with learning disabilities who need low reading level high interest books to develop reading fluency and comprehension. In "My Weird School Special: It's Halloween I'm Turning Green" by Dan Gutman, students will follow the adventures of AJ and his friends as they try to have the best Halloween ever. Students will read three chapters of this accessible graphic novel each session. Students will respond to what they read using graphic organizers and class discussion to support writing development and comprehension. Class ends with planning a fun Halloween celebration that the learner can enjoy with friends and family. This is a self-paced class so there will be no live meetings. Week 1: Halloween Hijinks! Intro Video: Share some of your favorite Halloween costumes of all times. Feel free to post a picture if you have one. Activity: Write and draw a comic about a "rule of being a kid". Share a picture of your work in our online classroom. Week 2: The Halloween Monster and Nightmares Intro Video: What do you think is the best holiday and why? Activity: Draw and label the Halloween Monster Week 3: A Nightmare! Intro Video: What is your favorite Halloween candy and why? Activity: Make a comic strip of AJ's nightmare. Week 4: Surprise Endings Opening: Share a Halloween tradition that your family enjoys. Activities: * Find or create a recipe for a Halloween treat and prepare it. Share your recipe and a picture of the finished product in the online classroom so others can give it a try! * Watch teacher created videos on online planning strategies. Plan a fun Halloween activity to do with family or friends using Tear Off or Post- It note planner strategy. You can eat your yummy treat while you work on this project.
Learning Goals
Students will gain fluency and comprehension by reading and discussing the novel. Students will practice organizing and communicating their ideas using graphic organizers, creative writing, and other strategies.

Share the weirdest part of the book so far and make a comic about JJ's nightmare.
Lesson 4:
Surprise Endings
Plan a Halloween activity for family and friends and prepare a Halloween treat!

Learning Needs
This class is designed to support students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities with a low reading level book. Students can use graphic organizers, create videos, or draw to respond to class posts and videos.
Parental Guidance
In our class we will review using Kahoot! and may use collaborative Google Docs to share our ideas.
Supply List
"It's Halloween, I'm Turning Green" by Dan Gutman is required for this class. Students may use e-books, hardcopy and paperbacks, or audiobooks to read and comprehend the text. Handouts will be uploaded in into the Outschool classroom before some sessions. Paper, markers or colored pencils, and pens or pencils are great to have on hand for class activities. Post-It notes are recommended for the last class session. Students are invited to share a picture of their Halloween costume or their Halloween in the last class session if they wish.
