Class Experience

Teens with ADHD and other learning differences find self monitoring, working memory, and task initiation challenging. Teens will have the opportunity to learn more about how executive function skills stay on track, remember what's important, and get started on tasks that they find hard or boring. Students will practice scenario based problem solving, share their own experiences, and learn tools that can help them strengthen their ability to employ these vital executive function skills.

Each class will include:

1) An introductory question related to the executive function skill of the day.

2) An overview of that executive function skill and how it can make everyday life and academic life easier and more fun.

3) An opportunity to brainstorm scenarios that require students to use the executive function skill of the day and to develop some potential responses to them.

4) Receive a concrete support or activity that they can use to practice their executive function skills in this area.

5) If there is time, teens will have the opportunity to ask questions about executive function and/or do a quick share with other students.

Themes each class meeting:

Meeting 1: Task Initiation (Taking action to get started on tasks)

Meeting 2: Self Monitoring (Being aware of how you are doing in a given moment)

Meeting 3: Working Memory (Keeping key information in your mind while using it)

Learning Goals

Teens will improve their understanding of self monitoring, working memory, and task initiation. They will leave class with some concrete tools to practice self monitoring, improve their working memory, and tackle tasks that they may find boring or difficult.
