Class Experience

In this 4-week flex course, students will learn how to sew a simple skirt, a layered skirt, a reversible skirt, and a wrap skirt through pre-recorded videos, receiving feedback on their progress and other interactive methods on Outschool deemed necessary to ensure student success. Students will learn to properly take measurements and cut fabric pieces based on those measurements. We will learn about seam allowance, multiple ways to finish raw fabric edges, creating a casing to enclose elastic for waistbands, and how to sew multiple layers of fabric together to achieve a new look.

Students should know how to thread machine and have had practice sewing straight lines prior to taking this course. Your students' success in making their garments is my priority, therefore if your student needs practice, whether a lot ot a little with sewing straight lines, I recommend they to take my 'Beginner Sewing Camp' course where I teach sewing straight stitches and zig-zag stitches.

Sewing has been shown to build creativity, Focus, Improved Hand-Eye Coordination, Builds Self-Confidence, Wards Off Dementia and more. Sewing teaches discipline, calmness, and patience. Sewing encourages creativity and a sense of accomplishment, especially for children.

Every week, student will need a working sewing machine, thread that matches or coordinates with fabric choices, a seam ripper, fabric scissors, measuring tape or ruler, pins, and needles.

NOTE: 1) If thread is the same color as the fabric, it will be easier to disguise any mishaps or curvy lines. If using a contrasting thread color will pop and give your garment some pizzazz. 2) You can purchase a sewing kit from a sewing store or some retail stores as well. 3) Fabric amounts are estimates therefore you may require more or less yardage. Don't worry, I will be teaching more classes where we use fabric scrap piece to sew cool things so be sure to hold on to it.

Students will complete said weeks' project within the week of it's video release. I will be available for questions and discussions throughout the week in the Outschool classroom. Lessons will take 30 minutes to 2 hours to complete. Please do not hesitate to ask questions and leave comments in the classroom because someone else may be wondering the same thing. Students will post pictures of their weekly projects throughout the various stages of completion from start to finish in our classroom and I will provide feedback of your work. Students will be able to ask questions each week and I will answer them. Students are expected to share their fabric choices and reason for choosing said fabric with each other and make comments. Students will also post pictures of their completed garments to share with their peers. Each student is expected to comment on at least one other students finished project post.
