Does your learner like solving puzzles and mysteries? Then this class is just for them. In this engaging 4-week club, students will explore the world of cryptography - the study of writing or solving codes. Codes and ciphers have been used throughout history to pass along secret messages, which is exactly what we are going to learn how to do. Each week students will be introduced to a different type of code or cipher. Through hands-on practice, creative challenges, and historical context, learners will stretch their thinking while strengthening logic and problem solving skills. . What we'll explore: Week 1 – Students will learn about the history of cryptography and be introduced to Morse Code. Week 2 – Students will learn about substitution ciphers including Caesar, Atbash, and Pigpen. Week 3 – Students will learn about transposition ciphers including Zigzag. Week 4 – Students will embark on some final cryptogram challenges. Students will want some paper and a pencil handy during each class, plus there will be handouts posted in the classroom prior to each class to help guide them through the encoding and decoding process. This class is ideal for curious learners who enjoy brain teasers, puzzles, or history with a twist of mystery.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to encode and decode a variety of codes and ciphers while stretching their thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Intro to Cryptography + Morse Code
Students will learn what cryptography is and how secret messages have been used throughout history. They will explore Morse Code, practice encoding/decoding simple messages, and create their own Morse name or phrase.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Substitution Ciphers – Caesar, Atbash, Pigpen
Students will explore substitution ciphers where letters are replaced with symbols or other letters. They’ll practice decoding messages using Caesar shift, Atbash, and Pigpen, then create secret messages of their own.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Transposition Ciphers – Rail Fence & Zigzag
This week focuses on transposition ciphers that scramble letter order. Students will learn how these ciphers work by encoding and decoding messages and comparing them to substitution methods.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Cryptogram Challenges & Final Spy Mission
Students will solve multi-step cryptogram puzzles and complete a final “spy mission” challenge that uses skills from all previous weeks. They’ll also get a chance to design their own cipher or challenge to share.
