Experiencia de clase

Taught by a certified Health Education Specialist, this course is designed to give learners a basic understanding of the human body.

Students will discuss the following topics: basic anatomy and physiology, nutrition, physical activity, health, and safety.

The course schedule will include the following:

Week 1-Body Systems. Students will learn the 3 major body systems (skeletal, muscular, and integumentary system) and what each system does. Students will be able to identify at least 20 bones and will learn a fun song to help memorize them.

Week 2- Body Systems. Students will learn about the digestive, nervous, and excretory systems and how they help the body. Students will be able to identify several major organs.

Week 3-Nutrition. Students will learn how the body breaks down food into energy and the main food groups. They will also be able to identify how each type of food benefits the body and what a balanced plate looks like.

Week 4-Nutrition labels. Students will learn how to read a nutrition label, how to count calories, and how to select healthy food choices.

Week 5- Nutrition in action. Students will be able to create a healthy breakfast, snack, and popsicle.

Week 6-Exercise. Students will learn what exercise is and how to burn calories. They will also learn how to take their own pulse, healthy sleep habits, and the importance of hydration.

Week 7-Exercise in Action. Students will be able to participate in a live workout class. They will learn the importance of stretching, safe exercise, and cool-down exercises.

Week 8- Safety. Students will learn injury prevention for several different scenarios including water safety, fire safety, heat stroke, electrocution, choking prevention, and sports safety. They will learn what basic first aid is and how to create their own first aid kit.

Each unit will include activities that help to reinforce the topics being discussed. For example, during the nutrition unit, the learners can participate in an introductory cooking class. During the physical activity unit, learners will get the opportunity to participate in an exercise class. Some of the remaining units will include worksheets, discussions, games, and matching activities.

Students will work individually to complete small projects to present to the class. Some research will be required for these activities.

By the end of the course, the learners will be able to identify body systems, make healthy choices, incorporate safe exercise into their daily routines, understand disease and injury prevention, and create a final health project. Learners will be expected to participate in class discussions, activities, and projects by using critical thinking skills, collaboration, and communication with peers and teachers, along with the responsibility of participating in class consistently.
