Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Welcome witches, wizards, and muggles to the Harry Potter Book Club!

In this class we will read the second Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" by J.K. Rowling. This class is perfect for first time Harry Potter readers and for students that want to re-read the series. In this class we will follow along with Harry, Ron, and Hermione on the adventures that await during their second year at Hogwarts! This is a flex class, so there are no live meetings, but we will still be interacting and participating with each other in the classroom! Each week there will be discussion questions posted in the classroom that the students will need to answer after reading the assigned chapters. The discussion questions will help the students to critically think about what they read each week. Through the class discussions the students will work on comprehension skills, character analysis, comparing and contrasting, connections, author's purpose, and much more! The discussions will take place in the Outschool classroom and students are encouraged to respond to their classmate's posts as well as the questions.

Each week the students will also have a short writing assignment to submit. They will have a choice of two writing prompts each week and will complete and submit whichever one they prefer. The writing prompts will be based on the reading from that week and students will be encouraged to get creative in their writing. I will provide feedback on student writing each week highlighting what I think they did really well with and giving some tips on how to make their writing even better.

Parental Guidance
Harry Potter is a much loved children's book series about wizards and magic. The books in this series start out lighthearted but do get a little darker as the series goes on. Later books in the series deal with the bad guys wanting to kill people that don't have "pureblood" and the deaths of some beloved characters. I always recommend that parents read a book first to decide if it is a good fit for their child!
Supply List
Students will need a copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling. Print books, e-books, and audiobooks are all fine, choose the book medium you feel most comfortable with!
