Description
Class Experience
Welcome witches, wizards, and muggles to the Harry Potter Book Club! In this class we will read the first Harry Potter book, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's / Philosopher's Stone" by J.K. Rowling. We will follow along on the adventures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione during their first year of Hogwarts. This class is perfect for first time Harry Potter readers and for students that want to re-read the book. Each week the students will read the assigned chapters before our live class meeting....
Students will engage in book group discussions each week. Through these discussions we will work on comprehension skills, analyzing the characters and their actions, making connections, discussing the author's purpose for including different events and characters in the book, and comparing and contrasting different characters and events.
I am a licensed school librarian and classroom teacher. I have over ten years of experience leading book groups in the classroom, in the library, and online. I am a Hufflepuff that loves to spread my love of all things Harry Potter to anyone and everyone I encounter in my life.
Students will be expected to read the assigned chapters before class each week.
Students will need a copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (or Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone if you are outside of the US) by J.K. Rowling. Print books, e-books, and audiobooks are all fine, choose the book medium you feel most comfortable with!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Harry Potter is a much loved children's book series about wizards and magic. The books in this series start out lighthearted but do get a little darker as the series goes on. Later books in the series deal with the bad guys wanting to kill people that don't have "pureblood" and the deaths of some beloved characters. I always recommend that parents read a book first to decide if it is a good fit for their child!
