If you are a fan of dystopian books like The Hunger Games or Divergent, then you will love the Red Queen series! Red Queen tells the story of a dystopian world where people are divided based on the color of their blood. The elite, silver blooded have special powers that they lord over the ordinary, red blooded. Mare Barrow is a Red, someone who should not have any special abilities due to the color of her blood. Quite by accident, she finds herself immersed in the Silver world where she discovers that she actually does have powers, just like a Silver. After her powers are discovered, she is thrown into a world of political scandals and cover-ups and she must figure out how to balance her involvement in both the Silver and Red worlds. In this class we will read through King's Cage, the third book in the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. It is necessary for students to have previously read Red Queen and Glass Sword before continuing on to King's Cage. Students will complete the reading before class and then we will meet together to discuss the book. Through our class discussions we will work on: -comprehension skills -analyzing the characters and their actions -making connections -discussing the author's purpose for including different events and characters in the book -comparing and contrasting different characters and events The teacher will use discussion questions to guide student conversations and discussions. Students are encouraged to jot down any questions or thoughts they have while reading to share with the class. Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings from the readings each session. We will meet twice a week for three weeks and follow the schedule below for reading the book. Class 1: Chapters 1-6 Class 2: Chapters 7-12 Class 3: Chapters 13-16 Class 4: Chapters 17-19 Class 5: Chapters 20-24 Class 6: Chapters 25-Epilogue Please have the first 6 chapters read before the first class meeting.
