In this 5-week theatre camp we'll be auditioning, rehearsing, and performing a play! With permission from the playwright, we will be presenting a 30-minute play called "The Adventures of Captain Ally". This is a fun, comedic play about making friends and standing up to bullying behavior, based on Committee for Children's Steps to Respect curriculum. It is an adaptation of a longer play that has been performed by a professional theatre company over two hundred times for elementary school children in Washington state. The synopsis: Louis has a problem--he's the new kid at school and he's getting bullied. While working on his school presentation on pirates, he falls asleep. When he awakens, he finds himself on a pirate ship! There Louis meets Captain Skalliwag and his crew. At first Louis is miserable--Captain Skalliwag has Louis scrubbing the decks and peeling potatoes with a dull spoon. But first-mate Davy gives Louis some much needed advice that helps him change his situation and stand up to Captain Skalliwag. Louis and the crew eventually become friends, and Louis helps the Captain hunt for hidden treasure as well as face his nemesis, the dreaded Captain No-Beard. What will become of Louis and the crew of the Buccaneer? Join us to find out! I'll be emailing a PDF of the script before class. Students can choose to read a paper copy of the script, or read a digital copy side by side with Outschool on their computer screen during class. If using a paper copy, I'd encourage the script be stapled or kept in a 3-ring binder, to helper the students stay organized. In addition, I'll be sending out a few PDF's with additional crafts or activities for students throughout the week. Week 1: Theatre games and an extremely laid-back audition Week 2: Parts assigned and read through of the entire play Week 3: Block entrances and exits on Zoom, talk about props, and read-through of play Week 4: Character exercises, and read-through of play Week 5: Final performance! Your family is welcome to watch the class recording after class *I spelled theatre two different ways in this listing so that the Outlook search engine would find this class. I prefer "theatre" but both are legitimate spellings!

Supply List
Students will receive a copy of the script, which should not be shared or emailed to others due to copyright laws. We will discuss possible costume and prop ideas, which should only be instigated if it is fun and easy for the learner.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I will provide a pdf of the play in advance. Although this will be available in digital format, it may be helpful for some students to have a printed copy. I will also be providing some links and resources for students who want to make props (optional).
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is Bethany, and I love to teach kids!
I have a B.A. in Theatre and a minor in English Literature. After college, I interned and apprenticed at Seattle Children’s Theatre, where I learned how to work with children and teach theatre. I worked with all different ages and enjoyed my time there thoroughly.
I've been teaching theatre now on and off for the past 20 years. I've had my own theatre company and worked for many different schools and theatre companies, both leading classes and directing children's plays. I also spent a couple years working as a professional actor after college while living in Seattle. For the last 15 years I've been writing touring shows for Taproot Theatre's Road Company, which have reached over one million school-aged children to date.
Additionally, I spent 2 years teaching ESL remotely online to students in China, and earned a TEFL certificate during that time.
I want all my students to feel welcome, relaxed, and respected. I work hard to make sure that all voices are being heard, and that everyone is being treated with kindness and generosity. It's really important to me that learner's are engaged and having fun.
I have three boys and 2 cats, and I love to travel, read books, mountain bike, bake, and watch movies in my free time. I hope to see you in one of my classes!
