In this class students will explore three popular classic children's books: Pete the Cat, Frog and Toad, and Are You My Mother?. We will discuss the components of a "Hero's Journey" story adventure and learn about internal vs. external conflict. Armed with these examples and information, students will then have the opportunity to write their own children's adventure story! Day #1: Day one we are examining books that work! Why are these books that children love? In this class Ms. Jackson will read books and learners can remember their younger years. Day one we are outlining the adventurous assignment! Students will write a 15-20 page (2-5 sentences per page!) hero's journey adventure story geared for children ages 5-10. The story should have a hero and an internal or external conflict, challenges on the journey, and end with a resolution to the conflict. Students can exercise all their imagination and creativity to create fun and interesting characters for children to enjoy! Day #2: Day two we will talk about courage with our creativity. This is a work day and students will use most of their time writing. Day #3: Day three we write. Day three learners will share their rough drafts with the teacher and class and Ms. Jackson will offer feedback. Day #4: Day four we will talk about how to read dramatically and practice. Students will have the opportunity to share their final drafts: their adventure storybooks!

Teaching, performing for children as “Queen of Theatre,” or directing “Ms. Jackson’s Theatre!,” Kirsten Jackson facilitates imagination and confidence using silliness and laughter to create a safe place where students shine.
A widow who raised three 2E children on an acreage surrounded by animals, she believes creativity is key to authentic self-awareness. Jackson has 27 years teaching experience and 15 years directing experience. She currently teaches theatre and writing for Outschool and Young Scholars Academy.
Sydney Clemens says, "Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves instead of more like everyone else." Ms. Jackson's goal is to allow students a safe place to explore and shine and comfortably be themselves.
