Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Welcome to a group to understands your love of adventure and fantasy books! This social club loves to talk about their favorite book series, characters, plot points, and authors. Sometimes our discussions are very general about types of books, and sometimes we discuss very specific plot points, writing styles, or character traits within a book. While Ms. Katie will come to class with a question or idea to start us off, the direction of each class is up to the learners!

Fortunately, and often unfortunately, our favorite book series are made into movies and TV shows! We always have LOTS to say about that, too! (I'm looking at you, Peter Johnson!)

In a group class, it's clear that not everyone will have read all the same series/books. That's ok! Some of the favorite books of learners in this class include the following:

Keeper of the Lost Cities
Percy Jackson (the Riordanverse)
Fablehaven
Dragonwatch
The Inheritance Cycle
The Maze Runner
Wings of Fire
The Ascendance Series
Wilderlore
Harry Potter
Supernatural Investigation Series
The Underland Chronicles
Plotting the Stars
The Hunger Games
The Pandava Series

*****SPOILER ALERT******
In a social club like ours, spoilers are possible - they just are. We do, however, do our best to double check with each other about spoilers before we talk about events in a series. Please be aware before attending class, that spoilers may happen. If hearing a spoiler would ruin a series for you, this class may not be your best fit. (We want all of us to love our books all the way to the end!)

Supply List
While there are no supplies required for this class, sometimes learners like to have a copy of their favorite series available so they can look up facts, trivia, or quotes from their favorite books during class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hello! My name is Katie Spitler, and I love teaching! I have a degree in music education and have been a teacher for over 20 years. I have been homeschooling my own children for 13 years, and prior to that I have worked as an elementary, middle school, and high school teacher for multiple subjects including music, English, math, and history. ASL is another favorite subject of mine, and I have enjoyed many years of working with the Deaf. We'll laugh and enjoy our class time, while also making learning top priority. Be sure to look for my piano/music classes, reading/phonics classes, cooking/baking classes and book clubs! See you soon!
