Intermediate Level
This class is designed to provide rising sixth graders with the skills and strategies they will need to succeed in an accelerated middle school curriculum. These classes are a hybrid of individualized learning and traditional classes. Each section has no more than six learners which provides a foundation for strong relationships, social-emotional learning, and truly individualized instruction. The curriculum is problem-based this means instead of lectures or videos students work together as a small group to solve problems to discover principles and strategies with teacher guidance, as necessary. Therefore, we will spend approximately 90% of each class period working on problems and discussing them as a group. The use of discussion and problem-solving leads to generalized mathematics or proofs. This process prepares students well who may seek advanced mathematics in high-school or beyond. Students will complete a math notebook In the style of a to help with recall and long-term retention.
Learning Goals
Students consolidate and solidify their understanding of various concepts and skills related to major work of fifth grade. They also continue to work toward fluency goals of the fifth grade.
Divide multi-digit whole numbers using place value strategies and the properties of operations.
Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Solve multi-step problems involving volume.
Review the major work of the grade by creating and designing instructional routines.

Lesson 1:
Producing the Largest Product
In this lesson we will compare and contrast products made with the same set of digits to understand how to make the largest products preparing for pre-algebra and algebra 1 ideas while practicing efficient multiplication strategies. 45 mins online live lesson

More Multiplication
In this lesson, we will practice a variety of strategies to find efficient ways to multiply large whole numbers by observing patterns. 45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Factoring in Factors
In this lesson, we will consider factors in multiplication problems as a way to help us choose efficient strategies and expand our mental math skills. 45 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Diving into Division
We will practice long division and use logical estimates to identify mistakes in the our work and example work. We will practice writing division expressions for real world situations 45 mins online live lesson

Parental Guidance
We will be using nearpod during this class. Students will need to click a link in chat and enter their first name or initial into the program. Students should be reminded not to use their full name.
Students will also need access to scissors and may require adult supervision or support.
Pre-Requisites
Students should have good content mastery over elementary math standards. Students should have proficiency (with or without aid) of keyboard and mouse or touch screen devices.
Supply List
Learners will need standard school supplies such as a notebook, pencil, ruler, highlighter, scissors, and tape/glue. For games they will need a dice with numbers, four paper plates, and four paper clips.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
