Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
In this class, students will learn that math problems can be fun and engaging. We will connect reading to math by reading a riddle of the day. Then the students will work together in a discussion format to discuss the information in the riddle and solve. This class is meant to wake the brain up, stretch the mind, and show that even challenging learning can be fun.

The better the students do with the riddles throughout the week - the more challenging the riddles will become. Students will be encouraged to use some form of writing tool and paper or whiteboard to put their thoughts in writing along with the class discussion.

Each class is a stand-alone class that will not need any previous knowledge for past classes. We will solve new riddles each class period that all revolve around basic math skills.

The math riddles will follow a 4 week rotation with skill theme. The rotation will be scheduled as follows:
Week of June 5th: addition math riddles
Week of June 12th: subtraction math riddles
Week of June 19th: place value math riddles
Week of June 26th: shapes math riddles

Week of July 3rd: addition math riddles
Week of July 10th: subtraction math riddles
Week of July 17th: place value math riddles
Week of July 24th: shapes math riddles

-After week 4 the rotation will begin again from the beginning.

Along with math riddles for each class period, the learners will also practice inferencing and drawing conclusions while reading.

No additional materials are needed. All materials will be provided in class and shared on the screen.
Learning Goals
The students in this class will learn to challenge their mind by using text and stories to analyze riddles and math problems. They will then stretch and grow their minds by solving the riddles.

Teacher expertise and credentials
In my 10+ years of specializing in Elementary math, I have learned that when you stretch your brain and find ways to solve problems - problems become easier to solve. When adding stories and riddles to learning the student gets more engaged in the fun and wants to find ways to solve the problems just to find a solution to the riddle. When joining these ideas together {reading / problem solving / math} students are learning in a less stressed environment and are allowing their mind to stretch and grow while having fun.
