Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
In this lively and interactive book club, pre-teens will explore exciting fiction stories while developing essential reading comprehension skills and connecting with like-minded peers. Learners will dive into the fundamentals of understanding characters, identifying themes, making inferences, and more. Each session is designed to enhance critical thinking, expand vocabulary, and foster a love for reading in a supportive, social environment.

Over the course of this 10-week program, we will cover the following topics:

Predicting Outcomes: How to make informed guesses based on story details.
Character Analysis: Understanding character traits, motivations, and growth.
Making Inferences: Drawing conclusions based on text clues.
Understanding Themes: Identifying the underlying messages of stories.
Comparing & Contrasting: Analyzing differences and similarities between characters, settings, and events.
Problem Solving: Exploring how characters overcome challenges.
Each week, we'll explore a different story, with seasonal themes that align with the calendar. These stories will be short, allowing for meaningful discussion within our 40-minute sessions.

The class meets twice a week, allowing students to spend the first session focused on reading and comprehension, and the second session engaging in deeper discussions and collaborative activities. The books are carefully selected for their readability and engaging content, with each book covered over the span of two weeks.

I use an interactive teaching style that blends discussion, guided prompts, group activities, and creative projects to engage students. I introduce key concepts through fun and thought-provoking prompts, which help students connect to the material. We'll use a mix of interactive discussion boards, slides, and digital tools like quizzes and virtual whiteboards to keep the sessions lively and visually stimulating.

Learners will interact with me and their peers throughout every session. I will be actively involved in facilitating discussions, offering feedback, and guiding comprehension activities. We’ll use a combination of live discussions, interactive slides, short games, and virtual collaboration tools. There will also be opportunities for learners to participate in group-based projects and activities, making it a highly engaging experience for everyone.

This Homeschool Book Nook Social Club is more than just a reading comprehension class—it's a vibrant social space where pre-teens can connect with like-minded peers who share a love for stories. While students will sharpen their reading skills through guided discussions and comprehension activities, they'll also engage in fun, interactive sessions designed to spark natural conversation and build friendships. With creative prompts, collaborative projects, and regular "ice breaker" questions, this club fosters both intellectual growth and social interaction, giving learners the chance to explore literature while forming meaningful connections in a relaxed, friendly environment.
